Hi, my name is Susan, and I love this site! Every time I get an email for DG I go down the list and go all kinds of places. I've just (just- like 4 years ago) moved down here to North Carolina from Long Island. On LI I had a sweet little cottage but the taxes got too high. For a couple of years I had begun to put real effort into my garden, but now I'm here, where there's so much land, and I'm having problems figureing out what to do. It begins with red clay soil, and goes on to wide stretches of grass, and a landlord that comes down in a HUGE tractor to mow! Plus of course the mailman who backed up over a tiny Pin Oak tree the landlord put in. But ... there's a fantastic 12 foot tall fig tree in the backyard, and an apple tree that WILL be rescued, if I have anything to say about it. My preference is for fruit trees (I make lots of jellies), especially Quince, windowboxes, and my little strip of garden off the front porch. I'm new to hummingbirds, but I love them, and my SO and I have an ongoing "bug of the day" thing going on. The carpenter bees eye us dubiously, but we'll get along! Just wish there were more gardeners in my area, I'm really in the middle of nowhere, here in Semora. Thanks, and I'm glad to be here!
