New from Southern California!!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi!

I just joined the site. I have recently graduated from a casual sometime gardener to a more devoted one (if only I could quit that pesky job!!).

We have been very fortunate to rip out our 25 year old ivy bed on our small front yard and build a super cool funky garden-everything from a brugmansia to kangaroo paws!!

Looking forward to sharing information and learning lots! What a terrific site and terrific group of people!!

Hi Jane. Welcome from an Iowa gardener. Daves is a great place and I know you will enjoy it day in and day out.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi neighbor!

I am over here on the Santa Ana/Tustin border, and I too have funky (though I prefer 'eclectic') garden/s on a postage-stamp lot... herbs to succulents, fruit trees-n-berry bushes to California natives; 15 salvias, 6 lavenders, etc.

I used to be a buy-a-few-6packs-of-annuals and replace-every-six-months kinda gardener, too, but (thanks to my mom, BloomsWithaView) I discovered what fun and a creative-outlet gardening can be! She comes from SE UT to visit & garden every late-winter/spring and over maybe five years we have finally gotten EVERYthing planted.

Well, there may be a spot for a cutting or a 4" orphan, but anything bigger will mean rePLACing something else. Which can of course happen...

I may know what you mean by "fortunate to rip out" the ivy. There is exactly ONE plant still here from when we bought this house (if you don't count the 'pink-clover-flower', apple iceplant, wandering jew, shamrock, spiderplant, and fortnight lilies that will still be volunteering a hundred years from now)!
I have not been able to come up with another plant to live in the miserable corner that original Indian hawthorne has, so it gets to stay at least for now!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi there Jane,

Yippee!! A new member from my city...welcome, welcome.

I have been a member here for 3 yrs. and it is my second home. Many of my plants are trades or gifts from all these lovely people here. My garden is also small and so different than anyone else on my block. I love flowers of all kinds and try to incorporate them into a decent look.

We will have to email each other and have a nice chat. Are you familiar with the MaryLou Memorial Garden Tour that will be taking place this weekend in our area? It's a must around here.

If you have any questions about things, feel free to ask.

Your neighbor in South HB,
Donna

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi Donna!

Yes I know about the Mary Lou Heard tour! My mom and I will be doing it for part of Saturday and Sunday!!

We can't wait to get a good look at "grown up gardens". My garden looks so patchy right now-I know I have to be patient and wait for some growing!

Another question-is Huntington Beach 10A or B? I get confused!

Welcome to Dave's janeqe. I am a bit south but have been known to traipse over to Huntington Beach. I am with TLC. When is the Party?!!

janeqe, Welcome from Hot and Windy Iowa! Well at least it was today! Probably change tomorrow, but what won't change is that we are happy to have you join us in the garden.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Jane,

I am not sure if we are zone 10 A or B. Maybe we can ask some of the garden people this weekend that are in HB.

Well, my garden buddy that was going to go on the tour with me this weekend, just wimped out on me....she has to go to NY on business. Too bad for her.

Hope to see ya around the gardens,
Donna
