A site called Data Doctors offers a list of programs they've tested and approved for various uses (anti-virus, pop-up blockers, etc.) http://www.datadoctors.com/hot/general.cfm?PageID=41
Many of them have been mentioned on this forum, but it's nice to have a reference list in one place. They also have a list of programs they've found to cause problems, and they recommend that in the interest of a stable system you not install these. Worth a look. Now the questions is, do you trust Data Doctors? For whatever it's worth, they're frequently quoted on Lockergnome.
