Hi Antoinette! One of your cannas that I grew from seed bloomed yesterday. I think it is either Robert Kemp or Intrigue, but I thought Robert Kemp flowers are supposed to be red. This is more of a coral. It's beautiful whatever it is! Do you recognize it at all? I would love to put a name to it if it is possible.
Gourd's Canna...
Pretty Clare. Maybe it cross with another canna and that is why the color is different that you expected.
Hi there,
Robert Kemp is red. I think that that canna seed does not produce the same plant as the parent plant. Only the species type, and I cannot remember right off hand which they are.. I haven't a clue which that is, only two of mine are in bloom right now, the Short Wyoming and Intrigue. Although, the Intrigue is supposed to be really tall, this year they bloomed at two feet tall. It could be an Intrigue seedling, the flower on that is Peach. I am sure that all of mine have cross pollinated somewhere in there. I guess, I did not help much here.
I sure am happy to see that it bloomed for you. This year, hopefully there should be more seeds of several varieties. The only thing that concerns me is that their was a big loss of the honey bee hives with the fires we had and nothing seems to be getting pollinated. The cherry tree was full of blossoms and there were no bee's to be seen anywhere. We did get two cherries on the tree, a few plums, one or two pears, same for the apricots, peaches, and berries.. This is going to be one fruitless year here in CA. I think the amount was over 6,000 beehives that were burned.
Thanks, Shirley! I bet you are right!
Antoinette, you did sent me Intrigue, but I thought Intrigue was supposed to have striped leaves, and these leaves are solid green. No matter though. It is very pretty. I have three other cannas growing that you sent me so I will definitely post when those bloom.
That is a shame about the bee hives. So far, all of my fruit trees have fruit. My peach tree is especially covered in fruit. My hummingbirds also help, I think, to pollinate the flowers, but I have seen bees around here anyway.
This is Intrigue again, the leaves are kind of long.
edited to say: The intrigue seedlings should have had the purple cast to them on the leaves. On these plants, some of the leaves are green, but the purple casting is on back also. They are nice and tall ones, I moved them this fall due to us building the detached garage, everything had to be dug up.

Ooo! That's a very pretty orange. Okay, I think I have the red-striped canna, the Intrigue, which hasn't bloomed yet, Robert Kemp, and this one. If I remember correctly, this one came up in the same pot as the one's labeled red-striped so it must have gotten thrown into the mix somehow. Or, like Shirley said, maybe it's a hybrid of some sort. It's blooming now, and it's only a couple of feet tall. It's a lovely addition with my Calla lilies and other cannas. Canna limbata looks a little puny compared to the others. LOL!
Oh Clare, I have a white canna, but don't know where it is...lol. it is in the ground somewhere, I kind of know the general area..
Mrs. Pierre DuPont is beautiful..
There is a possiblity that it could be omega, but not sure.. let me check out the photos.. but omega is tall also. Mine are doing weird things this year. I don't know if they got too much water this past winter and that is what is causing them to bloom short..lol
HI yall, This is my first year for cannas. Antoinette got me started with Black Knight and Louis Cotton, both of which are blooming now, and I got striped beauty and bengal tiger from a DG friend from Texas, both are blooming and I bought some additional from Touch of Nature and a couple of those are ready to bloom. The plants are doing very well despite 5 LEAF ROLLERS I had to pull off and murder. (I realize they are just future butterflies looking for a place to nap, but ewwwww.)
I really am glad to being acquainted with these plants, I think we're gonna get along just fine. Thanks Gourd.
