Does anyone have a recipe for potting soil for the plants I will be receiving this week from Country Garden?? Also, do I need additional instructions and when do I start feeding them?? I'll have 9 plants and I have black pots that are about 10 inches in circumfirance, sp, will they be suitable and, if not, what size should I use??? TIA!!! SLike

I use a mix of Peters potting soil and peatmoss,50?50.
Your pot size will be fine for new cuttings.

Hi Sherry. I make my own potting medium, as I have soooo many potted plants, much cheaper to make my own. I use 2 parts peat moss, 1 part compost, and 1 part mason sand. Mix it all up and "voila"...........a good, inexpensive potting medium.

I have some MG with the water retention things in it...would that work too? ( I am also expecting my brugs from country gardens this week) or is more peat moss in the mix better?

I am like Anna,I mix the Peat in to save cash.I have not tried the crystals.

When you use so much peat moss, you should check the ph value. You may have to add lime to it.

That's interesting, I've never used peatmoss in pots, but I suppose it helps hold the moisture. I do not want to drive you nuts about this, but does it have to be Peters and would you use the one with fertilizer added? I don't think I can get Peters at Walmart, but I will try there before I go to Greenville. Do you put shards in the bottom of the pot?? I only ask that because none of the plants I've bought have them anymore. Do you use Osomocote, sp, in the potting soil and how old should they be until I feed them, and where should I put the pots, sun, shade? About the peatmoss - I have rich top soil and garden soil (cottonseed, manure, compost, etc), so I've always used that, the Osomocote and potting soil, with fertilizer, to pot or plant stuff, however, it does make for a pretty heavy pot and I assume, with the peat that the pots are a little lighter, right? I want to get the right stuff and I have to go to Greenville every week to take my aunt to therapy, so I can get it then. SLike

I only chose the Peters over MG potting soil,is because it a dollar cheaper at HD.I have to Agree with it raising PH,I have not shown effects from it,but I will watch for it.

I don't understand, except like chlorine, chlorine is chlorine regardless of who makes it, same with the potting soil, huh???

I've used several different kinds of mixes and find differences in them. I always liked Ball mixes until I tried Promix. Decided Promix was the best until I found FaFard. It has a wetting agent in it and it seems to hold moisture longer. I lucked out a few minutes ago and found a supplier about 80 miles from me, so I've got to go load up.

I use ProMix and add the bark soil condition.

We do not have promix here. I use supersoil, cow doo, and MG garden soil mixed. I like it heavy.

Such good ideas, thanks all!!! What about using my nursery man's special blend potting soil??

I use Fafard and Fertilome, both equally good mixes, and soiless. Promix is what Calalily used and she had really good results with. I bought a bag of MG last year after so many people asked for it at the greenhouse, my brugs I put in that soil were not happy. They were slower than the others. The soil gets very heavy after watering twice, like concrete. If I were going to have to use it again I would have to do some serious mixing to it. Osmocote is ok, but you will need to feed with something else way before the time it says on the bottle, these plants are such heavy feeders I find that osmocote can not keep up. That though, as they say, is just my opinion.

I've been mixing MG potting soil (2 scoops) and coarse vermiculite (1 scoop). The MG because I can get a bigger bag for less money at Sam's, and the vermiculite comes from a feed store. They ran out of it, and won't get a new shipment in until Thursday, so I bought some vermiculite at a nursery this weekend. Smaller pieces, higher price and I don't like it nearly as much.
