Alley tree vs. bush...how do you get the tree...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

...I like the trees! Is where the cutting is from the deciding factor on whether it will be a bush or a tree? How about in a seedling....is it the way it is trained? Is the Y much higher on the tree? is that how it becomes a tree and not a bush?

So many questions?

Seedlings almost always are tall trunked before they Y. That is what is so great about them. You don't have to work to get that nice straight trunk.

Also, most all bushes will get very long branches and you can either air-layer the branch or simply cut it off and root it and you will have a brug that is a tree. I always have many long branches that are straight. You will have fun experimenting with this.

Sometimes they put out a sprout from the root zone and you can make it into a tree form.

picturelady, have you received your plants from JT yet??? Mine came early this am, they are wonderful, the Dr Seuss has buds!!!! I feel like I should put some in the ground, but I hesitate until some of them are larger. My original plant was only one third the size of Dr Seuss and I stuck it in the ground - but I didn't know how precious these plants were then. What did you do with yours, ground or pot and if pot, what size???? SLike

Sherry....tear, tear...mine did not arrive yet !
Maybe I will write them! It may just be taking longer because I am further away! Hopefully they will arrive yet today. It is still only 9:15a here!
I will let you know and yes, please post photos! I do plan to put them in containers when they get here!

Sherry...did you get any word of when your package was sent out? I did not. I am wondering if they have even been sent out yet. There is no phone no. or I would call T.J. to see.

PL.... JT has his email address on his site. I am sure you can reach him quicker that way since he spends little time at Dave's.

From left to right: Dr Seuss, Maya, Culebra, Pink Beauty, Tiara (and, yes, Tiara is in a very old chamber pot, ha!), Whiskers, Ecaudor Pink, Butterfly, Species, V Peach and last, but not least, Spring Peach. Aren't they wonderful??!! I watered each after potting. When should I feed them, later today??? Picturelady, they were mailed the afternoon of the 28th and arrived at my door @ 8:30am, today. Dr Seuss has three buds. Maya is the smallest, but is very well rooted from a large cutting that goes sideways in the pot. Tell me about Culebra, I've never seen one with leaves like this, I will try to find a photo, I have totally forgotten what colour the plant might be, if I ever knew. Three of these plants are starter plants but I cannot remember which one, as all the plants were approximately the same size, at least re roots, I expected the starter plants to be tiny. My seeds did not arrive in the package, so I assume they were sent under separate cover. I've VERY pleased with them and I cannot wait to see yours, picturelady, boy, I hope they reach you today!!!!!!! SherryLike

Sherry...they look beautiful...I will have to go through your listing again...I didn't realize you got so many!! Now, I am jealous!!
What planting mix did you put them in? Kell said that she uses MG mix and super soil, both which I had at home until I potted up my newly arrived hosta a few min. ago. Used my whole bag of MG to do that! Have to run to the store, I hope they leave the package if I am not at home!!

((Preen))...thanks, picturelady!! I have a couple of fav nurseries and one grows all their own plants from seed, cuttings, etc. They make their own potting soil, which they have used ever since they went in business, and I've always like it to, so that's what I bought and it was pricey. Earlier this year, I encouraged them to try brugs and they got one huge plant and have made a bazillion cuttings from it and they use this potting soil, nothing else and their baby brugs are REALLY thriving. They also use Peters 20-20-20, every time they water. I surely hope my babies like their soil - I'm in trouble if they don't!!

OK...the postman brought my packages from T.J.'s. I have them soaking in water and super thrive, while I get my planting mixes! They all have really nice root systems.
I will take a photo after I pot them up! So glad that they got here instead of sitting in the post-office all week-end!
