Flea Products For Cats

I lost one of my cats {Elvis} due partly to what my DH and I believe was slow, systemic poisoning by one of those spot on products that the vet gave him last year for fleas.
I do not want to try it on my other two cats. They seemed to do fine on it but then so did Elvis til last time.
Right now they have on the "upper line" flea and tick collars- not an el cheapo.
Even though they live on the screened- in porch and do not go outside, they still get fleas each summer.
Any suggestions? What do you use for your kitties???
