Spring Start up

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Got the pump and filter installed again and found all the leaks in the plumbing, I think. After refilling from the dug well that is closer to the pond than the hose the water got grayish cloudy. Ph is a little high and my Nitrate test pills didn't survive being frozen; they don't disolve anymore. But at least I'm filtering again.

For the first time the pond froze solid this winter. Not much snow and a week of 20 below. Killed the pond lily and blue flag. Should I insulate the ice next winter?

Frankay how deep is your pond? Where was the lily and the blue flag for the winter?

I keep my pump going and it keeps the water from freezing solid. I position it so it just keeps the water moving below the surface. I think this past winter was the coldest my pond has seen but the pump was enough to keep the fish alive.

Pond, 3 feet down. It froze solid. Poppysue, I might try that this winter. This spring I found no dead frogs. (2 went to a big pond last fall) Keep a 2 qt. zip-loc in your car. Amphibians-R-us. Brrrrrr ice three feet deep is a lot. The poor plants didn't have a chance with it that way. Sorry about that.

You might try a new Ph test kit on your water if the Ph was good last year from the same well. Sometimes the chemicals are expired after just a few months and don't give you the proper readings.

Thanks Pond, I know I need a new kit. Last night was20 degrees. The Belfast Agway has turned into Ace Hardware. No more pond stuff. I'm bummed. Good supply for my copper trellis stuff but that's not what I really need. Got 1 foxglove for irises today.Have fun. I won't be reincarnated. I'm using it all up now. Frank

That's a real bummer when it is probably the only store in town there that had pond supplies. We were in Northport ME four years ago. Love that area but winters looked too cold for me. My Aunt kept trying to talk us into moving nearer her. :)

Maybe you can take a few hours and go to the big city for your supplies for the pond. Or there is always mail order.
