These cats are everywhere.....I must have counted 20 or more and looks like there is no end....so far they are on the butterfly weed and thats fine with me. Now when they move to my passiflora we will have a problem......
Has anyone else seen them? This is the first year I have been here so I don't know how they were last year......wow, theres a bunch.....

Hi Dee, They have huge appetites but they stay with their favorite host plant. The frittilaries and zebra longwing use passiflora incarnata and several other varieties if hungry as their host plant. I've always found that they do me a favor by munching on the leaves as it shows off the flowers more and with time I have more butterflies.

WillowWasp, if those are on the butterfly weed (which mine hasn't even come up yet), could the cats be swallowtails or monarchs?

Those are monarchs and I had so many already this year....hoping it will mean many butterflies for the yard this summer!

Don't know what they are yet but will watch and find out later. Here is a photo of one I got from Moonlighting last year I think these are the same.... first is the cocoon and the second is the BF..... :o)

I never tire of them.

Your caterpillar is a Monarch, so is the cocoon but the butterfly is a Queen. Lucky you!!

Edited to say - Welcome back Trish! Are you still taking lots of pictures??
