...I asked about pink a few days ago and got a lot of good responses. Since then I have found that I have an area to plant in my garden, that I hadn't thought of before.
So, now, instead of just a FEW brugs...it looks like I can have QUITE A FEW brugs!
What would be your choices for a newbie for other colors and types? and why? any photos would really help too!! Thank you!
What is your choices for brugs for a newbie...
Maya is a great brug and flowers well. I also like Dr. Suess or Charles Grimaldi for a yellow brug. There are so many, I don't think you would be disappointed in any of them.
Dr. Seuss looks very nice. I do already have a cutting of Charles Grimaldi, would these 2 be very similar ?
Are there some types that I should avoid because they do not bloom as well ? or grow as well?
Suess and Grimaldi are both good bloomers and smell great. Maya is just beautiful because of the variegated foliage and she has nice blooms and blooms heavy too. I can find something good about every brug out there, I think. I have less luck with versicolors than the others. They don't get as big for me either, but V. Orange is very pretty and quite a smeller.
Brugie...OK....What are some of the other ones that you have, that you are happy with? I don't mean to be a bother, but I am so excited about these right now, I want to learn all that I can!! Thank you! Margie
Margie, like Shirley said, and esoecially in your climate, all brugs will do quite well. Just get you some girl and join the club.
hummer...OK, I ordered some rockwool last night, around mid-night and have some more brug and datura seeds to plant. Can't wait to get started with it. I did plant 24 seeds in planting mix a few days ago and ordered Rosamond from Tracey.
Now, I guess I just have to wait and see how they do....while I look for other plants on-line! I will look into all the suggested ones first!
Margie, I have Ecuador Pink, Pink Beauty, Rosamond, Maya, Becca Lynn, Star Dancer, Elmira, Butterfly, Charles Grimaldi, Dr. Suess, Jean Pasko, L'Amour, ForeverMorr, Versi. Peach and Orange, Creamsickle, Double Peach, Arborea, Carissa, Species, and the list goes on and includes a lot of seedlings. I'm generally happy with all of the brugs I have. If not, I won't have it. The thing about brugs is that unless you own ten acres, have an endless supply of water and fertilizer, you couldn't possibly grow them all. There are just so many out there.
Thank you brugie...for the list of some of the ones you have...it will give me some place to continue, with my looking!
In the first year when I realized there were so many kinds available that I had never seen, I was happy with whatever. Now I am much more discerning. I have developed my taste in brugs and some forms I just enjoy more than others.
Because of my lack of space and the cost involved in growing these to adulthood, I am very picky in the seeds I grow. Well at least in theory! LOL.
Any will grow for you Margie for you live in brug tree country so look carefully at everyone's pics until you figure out which kinds sing to you!
Kell, I know what you mean...I went though that with daylilies! Oh, did I ever go through it!! I guess one of my biggest problems is, trying to select the ones I like from photos! This I also found out with daylilies....I can just love how a bloom looks on a photo and then when I actually see it, I am not impressed with it.
I would really like to see them in person. I know you have many & I would really love it if I could visit your garden and see some....before I rush off and make purchases I might regret later. So far I have not found another source to visit to see them...Do you know of any for sale or demonstration in our area?
You could come and see my daylilies too. I presently have 170 (but who's counting!)....I do have some purples that you might like in trade for a brug...I also have alot of pinks!!! What else can I tempt you with?? I'll even treat you to lunch!
Please let me know when you get home and maybe we can set something up. Can you tell I am looking forward to meeting you!?
LOL Margie! Well, it is too early for a good brug show. I have cut back most of mine for I do root pruning. Lots of nurseries carry them now Margie. I do not know where near you. I was tryng to find the ones I go to by you. They are 2 Japanese nurseries, one of each side of the road and then further down there was a Navelet's. One of them, is huge and I loved going to it. The other had lots of bonsai in the back and tons of fuchsias hanging. Do you know which ones they are? I think I didn't go last year. I used to go antiqueing on San Carlos and then stop by the nurseries.
I found this listing when I was looking for the names ( I didn't find them) and thought you may like to see it.

Kell...is one of them by any chance Yamagamis Nursery.....Saratoga- Sunnyvale Road in Cupertino. I called them and they said that they would be coming in late spring or early summer. So, I guess I have to wait alittle bit....I am NOT the most patient person in the world...actually I am just the opposite! I HATE to wait!! Thanks for the hint of where I can see them though!

Yes, that is exactly the nursery! I love that nursery! And it is not Navelet's there but Woolworth's Nursery. Though a new chain bought most of their nuseries out so it may have a different name now.
Summerwinds bought the Woolworth Nurseries! Good I am glad to hear that it was Yamagamis...they have very nice plants! With highway 85 that is now open, they are less than 20min. from my house!
Well, OK gals & guys, I thought you would be glad to see I made a decision. I have my Rosamond ordered from Tracey....& since she will not be available for awhile, I went a head and also placed an order with Country Gardens, which has a number of good references on the Watchdog.
OK...what I ordered was Maya and Whiskers ! So, now I think I can be considered officially addicted to Brugs (as well as to daylilies) ! So I guess I am now, Multiply Addicted !!! I love it!
Thank you all for your input!
You are going to have so much fun. You will get good plants from both places.
Thanks brugie...I am so looking forward to recieving them. I am obsessed once again & like I say, loving it!
Excellent choices picturelady, you won't be disappointed with those brugs.
OK...from reading more of your posts & seeing your photos...I just ordered ECUADOR PINK and VERSICOLOR PEACH to go with my other 2 ordered from Country Gardens! He said that he would send an extra one too! Now, I really can't wait to see my order!
I just love using paypal...it makes ordering so easy!
JT will send you some nice plants.
Thanks ahelms and Brugie and Liz...I hope my choices were good ones and that JT will send me plants that I will be delighted with! I will let you all know!!
I joined Dave's garden just (basically) for this topic. I am so excited about this plant! I have never even seen one close up. I saw one in San Francisco from afar. Didn't know what it was then. I cruzed all the websites you all posted. WOW!
I can't wait to actually have one of these plants! Much less a lot of them. I live in zone 7-8 so I'll have to bring them in the green house in the winter so I better pick a few special ones!
I do have white seed (1 so far) sprouted & a few Datura seeds sprouted. A friend sent me some stem cutting, but not quite sure what to do with them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Bj
Welcome to DG!! Is your cutting rooted?
Hi Bj...welcome to Dave's...I am new to brugs also, so I really won't be able to answer your questions, but just wanted to say "HI"! I see you are in CA also, but a cooler area in the winter...and a very pretty area too.
Other than my one bloom, I have never seen a brug in bloom, but have fallen in love with them from their photos! I went from 2 cutting from a friend (in Pismo) in March...to a trade...to another 5 I have ordered.
The members here are so knowledgeable and really nice also. I hope you enjoy it ! Margie in SJ
picturelady, do you have an addy for Country Gardens??? I couldn't locate it on Google. TIA!!! SherryLike
Root,
No they are just sticks, fresh & green, she sent me about 10. I'm just not sure what to do with them? Help!

Hey - do you CA girls live near Cupertino?? My cousin lives at a ranch, outside of town, on a mountain. It is lovely. Boy do I ever wish I had known about brugs the last time I was there! SherryLike
I would put them in glasses of water, not too much water,an inch or so,then in a sunny window, you will see white nubbies start soon, this is where the roots will form.change your water every couple days.
Sherry...I live about 20 min. from Cupertino!!! Have you any plans to visit in the near future?
It looks like there are quite a few of us new to brugs! This will be fun to learn together and share our experience and photos!
Hey, Thank-x root I'll do that. Keep yer fingers crossed!

I'm possibly going to be in Newport in Oct for the Golden Retriever National Specialty, unless I have a litter of puppies. I don't breed often, and when I do, I stay with them until they go to their new homes, which is 8 or 9 weeks. I already have reservations but I won't know for sure until Chippy is in season, which will likely be in Aug. If she waits that long, I hope she will be late so I can make the trip. I love CA and have lots of friends there and I visit often. My son has entered a triathlon, also, maybe in Newport and has started going frequently and, if Chip isn't ready to whelp or has babies, could be we might all be there at the same time. My dog pals will all be at the same place in Newport and, because I don't see some of them but once a year, it's difficult for me to leave the show or resort where we stay, but it would be fun meeting some brug guys and gals while I'm there!!!! Newport must be in Southern CA. right! Sounds like you have a great time. I will be in SO. CA in July for the Daylily Regional. (and in St.Louis the end of June, for the National) Too bad they weren't happening at the same time!
Let me know if you are coming to Newport though, who knows, I just may want another trip around that time!
