I have lost 26 brugs!!!! They are rotten down to the roots. They was in the garage during winter time and water them when it need to, well draining.. Plenty light in there. I moved them out in March. I went and checked on each.. Most they are still green and shooting some new leaves..
Some aren't I checked in and it was mushy. I have lost the good ones. Well I guess, I am going to put those names of brugs back on my want list again!
Those that brugs died in that dirts. Should I throw away the dirts and get new fresh soil and plant new brug in it?
26 brugs! :o(
Mini, what type of soil are you using?? It sounds like they stayed too wet over the winter. Once they start getting mushy, you need to let them dry out to the point of wilting before watering again.
I use the Miracle Gro potting soil. It's light weight. Mixed with little thing white foam, peat moss etc.
Don't feel bad. I lost a few too. I still haven't got the wintering over part mastered. I think my problem is I water too inconsistantly. I let them dry out too much... so some of the roots die. Then when I water the dead roots start the rotting process.
Live and learn.
Mini, if I were going to use Miracle Gro potting soil, I would add some pine bark soil conditioner to it. Miracle Gro potting soil does great in the summer because it retains moisture well, but that is not good during the winter. Constantly wet roots during the winter = death unless you keep them in a heated greenhouse where the temps stay 50 and above.

My goodness, I am so sorry!!! That's a BIG loss. Mini, I'm a newbie, but I noticed that you live in zone 9a. I live in 8a and I leave my brugs in the ground in the winter, with HEAVY mulch. Ed, my nursery man, lives in zone 8a too and he leaves his outside, in the ground, without mulch and he's never lost one. I only have two, but Ed has more than fifty...SherryLikeTheWine
SherryLike.. The reason they are not in the ground cuz we just moved in new house from old one on same property. I have to keep them in pots. I would go and ahead plant them in ground right now but can't do that now. DH said I have to wait cause we are getting lots of loads of dirts to fill out around house then I can start planting them around house. I know where to plant them where they can get few hours of sun and most of shades. I afriad the man with big dump truck would go over those brugs if they are in the ground. Lost 26, that's lot! But I can replace them anyway. When they are in ground.. I am going to leave them there and thick mulch cover during winter season!
