A CORNER BED
A CORNER BED
That is the corner I want my lawn chair near!!
It should be in full bloom next month. An EP & HG should be the 1st to bloom followed by some new crosses and some old favorites. All of my brugs, except for seedlings, should have their 1st full flush in May. Qupsy Queen had a full flush the last week of March. Really made rhe yard smell great.
Looks full..
how many in that corner bed and do you have a rule how close you plant yours?
It's going to be pretty jungle soon. As I know, brugs like shades!
I havn't counted, but somewhere around 25. I try to give 3 - 5 ft between them, but I'm sure some are closer. The closer they are together, the taller and straighter they will be.
Last year I planted my seedlings about 18 inches apart and it worked very well. I did only plant them three deep and staggered them so I could reach to remove leaves, etc. They didn't seem to mind being close and like Larry said, it does make for nice straight trunks. I did have a couple of odd balls that for some reason wanted to grow crawling across the ground.
That looks like it gets lots of shade. Is it full shade, or does it have a couple of hours of sun a day? My front yard is full shade, so I'm wondering if they'll grow there.
Shirley & Larry? posted that if they were planted closer together that it would produce straighter trunks. So, this means that it's best to have straight trunks, right?? If so, why, so you can plant more?? BTW, Larry, that is a beautiful garden - I'm Arky but in your zone, so I'm not going to fret that mine don't get sun all day - I suppose it gets as hot in AL as it does here. SherryLikeTheWine
It gets hotter here. Most of my brugs gets filtered sun for most of the day. Most only get direct sun for less than 2 hrs, either morning or afternoon, but not both, and some get only filtered. I cut off a lot of lower limbs off of trees to allow filtered sun. I do not think they would flower very well in total shade.
Thanks, Hummer. I'll just have to navigate around and see where they're happy. I'm sure the backyard has a couple of good places...she said with a gulp. lol
I see your brugs are in 5 gallon pots in that bed Larry. Did you make holes on the sides for roots?
I can't wait to see them all blooming.
Hummer...loved seeing your brug corner...you gave me an idea for my garden...I have an unused corner with some shade. A large pine tree from the neighbor's yard is over it. I am wondering if that would be a good place for my new brug garden. Maybe I will take some photos and see what you think!
You just brightened my day...and it is still mid-morning!! Thank-you!!!
Kell, you see better than me. The pot sizes range from 1 gal to 12 gal in this bed. No I did not cut any extra holes. I have found that the roots will find their way out of the existing holes. I think the extra holes would be as much for drainage as anything. Monika has been growing brugs for 23 yrs more than me, so you may want to do it her way. I have a saying, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.
picturelady, the only way you will ever know will be to give it a try. Last yr I had Whiskers under a pine, in a pot though, and it bloomed and set pods like crazy.
Thanks hummer...good idea, I will experiment with brugs in pots first! It just opened up an area for me to think...it is OK now to get more of them than what I first was thinking!
Hooray!!! Actually now that I am really thinking, another area just came to mind also. Got to do some hunting around here...looks like for plants that get as high as brugs, I will not be limited like I have been with daylily plantings!!
I am so glad to read this thread, with regard to plant placement-spacing. I planted all mine 36" apart, and was concerned that maybe they were too close. So far, not a crooked trunk in the bunch, but I have a feeling it may end up beiing too hot for them this summer. I sure hope not, though!
Gretchen, I'm a little worried about the heat now. I just found out that we are going to have to have our silver maple removed that has been my shade for the brugs in the past. I've either got to move them near the pine trees which will be harder to water or to the south side of the drive where I can't see them. Don't know what I'm going to do with those that need that little bit of shade.
Oh Shirley, that's a bummer! We had a huge Silver Maple in the back yard where I grew up. They are so pretty. I'm sorry you're losing it. I am kind of up against it here. I either have heavy shade (under huge old live oaks) ore pretty much full sun. I think its going to be a case of "survival of the fittest" here. I'm worried that the versis are in too much shade, and the rest too much sun, LOL. This will probably not be the ideal climate for brugs... You know though, as hot as its gotten here already, my mulch is doing a great job keeping the soil moist, and I have had no heat wilt other than the day after they were planted. They bounced right back. Of course it hasn't gotten really hot yet..................
Maybe we will luck out and have some nice summer weather that doesn't just suck the life out of our plants. Rain every week would be nice too, but that never happens. I guess you and I are doing some experimenting this year. Hopefully everything will work out okay.
The Good LORD willing :)
