What's this??

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

This thing does not look like a usual leaf emerging...is it a flower or a pod or just a deformed leaf of some sort?

What kind of plant is this?

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

oh my goodness! I totally forgot to say. silly me. Its a caladium. White christmas to be exact. sorry about that

Be sure to shake out the pollen and keep it in fridge if you get another bloom.

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Is there any special way to do that? Like with a qtip or what?

I was wondering about that today-- if they would be self fertile or if they even produce seeds, so thanks for leting me know to save the pollen.

I just take an open evelope and bend the bloom over and tap it,try to get it while it is powdery.I then store in the fridge.

I've been meaning to ask, and since yall brought it up, I planted a mess of caladiums a month ago.

They most all seem to be up now. They grow 1, maybe 2 leaves and then they sprout a bloom. Will I get more leaves off each bulb after the bloom, or is this the extent of that plant growth?

Cut off the bloom, and you will get more leaves and a bushier plant.

Art, the bloom will look sort of like a Calla Lily, it is of no consequence to your plant. If left intact it will deplete the energy to promote new growth.

interesting. thank you for that info.

Sorry,A_n_G,I did not even think of that,it will sap the energy, good call Eyes!I was just remembering how excited I was to get seeds and seedlings from one.

Against ya'lls better judgement, I let it bloom yesterday. Mainly, its because I didnt think it was so darn close to opening- it didnt even give me the chance to cut it off. But I saved pollen today, didn't seem to have a whole lot. Like white little hairy things coming out of the center pistil (is that what that is?) is that the pollen or should I be looking for something else?

ps. I'm a bit embarassed about the background of this picture, anyone else having this issue??!! maybe thats why I feel so behind. lol
