I have moved some cannas from one location to another to where I live now and I mulched them with out asking anyone if they will grow through cypress mulch? I made sure that they were 2-3 inches below the ground with the mulch. I got some in a trade and stuck them out of the ground and covered them with mulch and they grew but they were 1/2 way out of the ground. or growing a nice shoot so to say but it shot out a new one...... did I just answer my question?

Elyear, yep you just answered your question. I mulch almost everything that I plant in our winter (Ft Lauderdale) because it's drier and it helps to retain moisture. All the bulb I planted this year have no trouble finding their way through the layer of mulch, the cannas, caladiums, glads, ixies etc.
