Hi everyone.....I am sorta new at this gardening stuff, but I love it! I do have a few questions. Could someone please tell me what to do when the flower part of the canna has died and fallen off? Is there anything I am supposed to do to encourage more blooming?
Next question....Where would be the best place to place my morning glory pot? I started some seeds and they are up a few inches now. I want them to climb up my privacy fence but the location I have in mind only gets the very first morning sunlight, then shade the rest of the day. Do they need more sunlight to bloom a lot?
Thanks in advance!!
canna question
I think of my cannas as large tropical looking gladiolas. Multiple blooms on each stalk, opening at different times giving the illusion of a re-bloom. I plant my bulbs in a 2 week stagger, so I get a much longer bloom.
Good luck with them.....they like lots of water. :-)
Marc - that's a great idea - staggering the planting times. I have already done that, unintentionally. :)
Regarding the Morning Glory - when I looked them up, I couldn't find any real specification for how much sun they would need. I know they grow like crazy, so you might be ok with just morning sun. I have planted two in a location similar to that, and they seem to be doing ok. Hope that helps.

If you keep cutting the stalks off the canna after they bloom, they will send up new stalks and keep blooming. In my zone the MG's do the best in full sun and in less fertile soil. These are two of my favorites and luckily they do not require much care. ;)
My cannas bloom over and over and over again - not the same stalk, but they keep sending up new stalks. After about half of the leaves have died on a stalk that has alreadly bloomed, I cut it down to the ground.
Question: I had never tried cutting the cannas down to the ground to encourage new stalks for more blooms. Do the cannas not need the green leaves to build food for the corms (or whatever they are called)? If not, I will try it this year too!
I would only cut the flower stalk not the whole plant.........
Speaking of Cannas.......Last year I asked a question and now cant remember the answer and I need it now ! LOL Last spring my canna leaves "rolled up'' and I discovered it was caused by a leaf roller?! Anyway, the question was, how do I treat the problem? Any help would be appreciated
Sharon, you came to the right place. I had 5 leaf rollers last week. I pulled all 5 off, clipped the chewed leafs off. Pulvarized the worms with ant spray. (I know I over reacted a tad bit.)
You can treat the cannas with Sevin dust or another named powder to keep them from coming back, but I opted not to do that as I have food growing close by. So I just keep a watch for them and remove them. (Actually havent seen anymore since)
Good Luck
Molly
Thanks for the info MollyMc! I wouldnt know a leaf roller if I saw it, I dont like mashing bugs so I will probably go the sevin dust route!
Does anyone have website for Horns" Canna, need to see some pics. Would appreciate any website with canna pics. Thanks.
