well ladies i don't plant my dahlias or cannas, into the ground until the danger of frost has past. they like the earth warm, and putting them in now just leaves them susceptable to the rot from spring rains and cold.
one gent here has his canna's in but he is zone 6 and he covers them every night with plastic etc. i pot mine up and let them start there and then transplant them out a week or two before my last frost date which is officially may 30th. i think dahlia's won't even start to sprout without the earth temps being 60?
glads i would plant now they go deep enough. lilies can go in no problem too.
hope this helps and made sense it is 2:30 in the am and my eyes are getting droopy.

I'm zone 5b and I did put in my Dahlias, as the package specified "early" spring. I've done this before, and it does take some time before you see them pop up. The advantage I like about doing them early, is I stake them, and I know where "not" to plant, as I am adding more plants to the garden. (I have a tendency to forget where I have planted things, and also, the Dahlias I purchased take up quite a bit of space, so those stakes are a reminder that that large space is taken). I am excited about seeing them come up and bloom. Now if I can just remember to dig them up this fall I will be ok. I forgot to dig up my mignons I had in a prior year, and of course, they did not come back. boo-hoo, they were sure pretty.

Karrie--put a note on your calendar if you use one. It might help!
