Treatment of Stem rot

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Yesterday, I found a rot on this Brugmansia Tree. The tissue was mushy. It had started already two years ago. It dried up during last summer without treatment. But it continued to rot again during this winter.

The mushy tissue is removed. With a sharp knife, I made a deep cut into healthy tissue. New and old rot can easily be distinguished.

The wound is covered with a Tree balsam to avoid a new fungus and bacterial infection.

Rot spot on another Tree two weeks after treatment. Here, new tissue (callous) is developed to close the wound. The rot had been stopped successfully.

Great pictures and information there Monika! Thank you!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Great pics!! I had one in the hoophouse on a young tree. The rot was in the same place. It seems to have stopped now that the tree is outside but I bet next winter it will happen again. I wish I could find some of this tree balsam. Anyone know what it is in the US??

I had another one last month that was in the same place as yours and looked just like it. But at the time I saw the black and thought SB so I tossed it fast. It had 12 big RK pods on it. Kick me now! I should have sent you a pic Monika. The one I don't and look what happens!

Does the rot always start in the same place on the brugs?

"Orange shelac" is the closest thing Ive found on google. Its water resistant, thus keeping out the bacteria and fungus Im guessing. I read that it can be used after pruning trees. I wonder if this would work?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I will google for it Shelley to see if it is similar to the Balsam I use.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Ok Monika! I found ALOT of balsams used for humans, or animals as an antiseptic, but I am guessing it needs to be somthing waterproof, so no funkies get in.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Here is a place that carries the stuff Monika is talking about, I think. https://www.treecaresupplies.com/cgi-bin/TreeCareSupplies/catalog.cgi?ItemNumber=LS-T1000&CategoryID=96

I don't know why that didn't link, but you can copy and paste and see if it will work for you. I tried it and it worked.

Here is a german site.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Lac Balsam is also available here. It has no fungicide added.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Would it work if there was nothing else available. That is all I can find online over here. Could something be added to it or sprayed on the wound first and then sealed with the balsam?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Lac Balsam works very good. I spray the wound with Chinosol first and let it dry up first before I seal the wound. Chinosol helps against fungi and bacterias. It is a human medical product.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Now we must find Chinosol here. LOL

Thank you Mavie! You have helped us a lot.

Thanks MVR. Maybe we should share Kell. Did you see how many grafts that stuff will take care of? LOL! Hopefully I'll never need anywhere near as much as provided for the price.
Thanks for your help too, Monika.

Scoot, I copied and pasted it. Funny how it works that way. Too late now anyway.

thanks for the concern. deeply appreciate it.

ever since 9/11, i have occassional attacks of vertigo. an illness i would not wish toward my worst enemy. if one suffers from it, it make one feel like they are trapped inside a vortex - where everything is spinning full speed.

i do not have any ear infection accdg to my dr., which some people would attribute to vertigo. i am told there is no cure for it. so far, the only remedy i find is to sleep it off when i get the attack.

i can not be on the computer for long, otherwise i will get some dizzy spells and get vertigo attack. i just hope it leaves me alone so i can live a normal life. i miss not being able to use the computer. hope everyone understand if i am not as communicative as i once was.

Gosh MVR! Im sorry to hear this! Its SO frusterating when YOU know somthing is wrong, but THEY find nothing.
Have you tried Meclazine? When I had West Nile, this was the ONLY thing that worked for my spells. Its over the counter, and not expensive at all. Take good care of yourself.
