Coleus & Brugs

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

I was thinking of putting different varieties of coleus under my brugs. Can I have your ideas about which ones will look the best. I feel a new plant obsession coming on!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Coleus are one of my obsessions. I just love all the GUESS WHICH ONES.............PEPTO pink ones!!! LOL I never have put them with my brugs though but you would need the sun ones if you are planning to have your brugs in the sun. I usually plant hanging plants that drape down over pot not upright ones. Someone recently told me they had bought hanignig coleus, I think it was Brugie. I had never heard of that kind.

Kristi, did you plant coleus with brugs last year? I remember you had some great groupings in your brug pots around your pool.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I planted coleus in my big pots of brugs last year they did great. There are trailing ones that would be pretty too. I am going to try some of those this year. Trailing Plum Brocade is beautiful. I had it last year but didn't try it in my pots. I am going to this year.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I used coleus in brug pots a couple of years ago and found that the coleus would tell me when the brug needed water. It worked great for me until it was time to take them out of the pot and with all the fertilizer, I had some really huge coleus.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Hehe Shirley. I just cut them off to the dirt. Then when I brought the brugs out of the basement yesterday they pulled right out. My jasmines that I had in the pots lived and look just great.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ok, I need to find some trailing purple coleus! Were there some at the site you emailed about the other day Brugie? I am in the mood to buy myslef all sorts of treats.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'll look and come back and post the site here. I know Kyle put it on the Tropicals forum.

Thanks Peggy. They have very few trailing coleus, but several spreaders. You will just have to look. I love some of those at the bottom of the page. Have fun Kell.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I have got to find trailing coleus here.
Am I the only one who doesn't have any extra soil for other plants in my brug pots?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

How big are your pots, Liz? I'm now using 20 gallon pots. It takes a lot of soil and once in place, they just about have to stay there, but I don't have to water as much and it is worth it.

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

I found so many that I love at Rosy Dawn! Since mine will be going in the ground, I think that I will need the mounding type.

On the Hunt-----for trailing Coleus. Those pics are beautiful. I have been operating under the impression that coleus was happiest in shade originally and a popular Victorian houseplant and indeed in the 40s and 50s. It has been bred for Sun Tolerance in the last few years. Thus, I would think it would be quite shade tolerant. I don't know, I just use it in both areas for COLOUR!! Glorious.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Any luck finding it Sunrize? I now want every coleus there is.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree Liz, I would just love a huge collection. By the end of last summer I had beautiful ones, but killed them over winter.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Coleus are very attractive and good partner plants for Brugs. Only a few varieties are available here.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I love coleus! Here is a planter with a couple different types in it.

Love your pictures Kristi.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh my! Mind if I steal your ideas? Lovely pics

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thanks guys.. I know you've seen these a million times LOL...
Liz- Steal away... I just pack them with annuals. You can't go wrong.

This one looked good for about a month. Then it bit the dust. Too much heat and too much water to keep the brug alive.

Christmascactus- I'll try and dig it up for you in the a.m. I think the tag is still in the pot.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

datdog...Your plantings are just lovely. What is the name of the pink brug in your first photo?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I knew you had some lovely ones Kristi. Is that a petunia in the last one?

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

Great photos! Now I'm totally coleus obsessed.

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

I have Coleus "Inky Fingers" that I want to trade for some other colorful coleus... Is anyone interested in this one? I overwintered it inside, & took cuttings to share. The leaves are small lobed, black & green. (depending on the amount of light it receives) I love this one! I also agree it could become an obsession! Anyone have Coleus to trade or share?

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I combined Inky Fingers and The Line last year in a bed, they look so nice together, let me see if I can find the picture.

The picture is beautiful, MaryinLa! I went to Rosydawngardens.com & spent about an hour just mentally planting different coleus together. Such gorgeous colors! I note that they state they have the "real" Kiwi Fern coleus. I saw it in a magazine, & it indeed looked different than theirs. Now I know which is the real one! I could imagine an entire garden of Coleus... maybe the start of something!
