Culling Brugs.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

About a month ago,I saw the beginning of Spider mites on these two,I was not going to fight mites so close to spring,so I sat these out to freeze.
Well that was a month ago,it was very cold when I put them out,32 or 33,and has since frosted several times,I would cover the plants I had out,the ones too big to bring in,but not these,in my mind they were doomed.
Well this picture is today, and I will think twice about the lowest temps these can take.
This is Gypsy Queen and Herrhauser Garten.

The question is, did the mites survive too? LOL.

I do not know about GQ but I am shocked HG did not die. Well, you are stuck with them now. Such a will to live must be supported!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I know,I have back ups on both, with straight trunks, that was why it was easy to say goodbye.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

We don't call you the Rootdoctor for nothing!! LOL!

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Root,

Have the Mites dissappeared on these?

I'm fighting mites on 4 small plants that I purchased. I've sprayed them and even added some systemic chemical to the soil. The only thing that has happened is most of the leaves have fallen off. The Mites are still there!

Maybe I should give them the "Frost Treatment"

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I would not suggest the Frost treatment to anyone!!LOL!
Yes the mites are gone, and the plants look good.
I am really say this,to point out that they took the temps, not so much about the Mites.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Root,

I knew you weren't advocating Frost as a treatment for mites.
I'm just thinking that I would rather risk losing these plants to frost than having spider mites infest everything else.

I have these plants somewhat isolated, but not completely. It will be a last resort, but if I do set them outside, maybe they will be lucky like your's were.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Bet those mites are down in the soil, just waiting for a warm day to come out and show their faces and webs. Hope not. I just have a feeling this year is going to be a busy one with spraying.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Brugie, they live down in the soil? I didn't know that!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Gosh Rooty, Those look pretty good! maybe I should try it ;o)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, if they disappear from the plant, where would they go? I'm just guessing that the do stay in the warm soil.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I think eggs winter over in plant debris on the soil surface.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Spider Mites are not of tropical origin. They are a pest on ornamental shrubs and especially on Fruit Trees.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Maybe mite heaven, Brugie?

Washington, PA(Zone 6b)

I hope they go to mite heaven, they are such pests! And very persistant. You turn your back and they have a new home and a whole new colony!!

Good job rooty!
Brugs - 1; Mites - 0

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I thought I would Bump this back up.
There were 3 I put out to freeze.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, never saw a frozen Brug look so good. LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I love this thread!!! While reading through the part where Rooty said he put his plants out to freeze, I was wondering where in the world I'd put plants to keep them from freezing - then, I remembered our huge attic, with windows and heat and air. Do you think I could winter my plants in my attic, which does have windows, but not a world of light, but the plants would be very warm. Gosh, I hope I have stumbled into a way to keep more plants when it freezes!!!!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

What happened to Herrenhäuser Gärten Rooty?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

It is doing fine Monika, still no Y yet,and I am not fertilizing it,but it looks great.

Maybe after this experience, HG deceides to flower for you lol!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Hey doc, has HG got buds yet?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hey Susie, mine does. They are little and a couple have fallen off, but at least it is doing something. You know...if it doesn't produce this year, it is absolutly, without a doubt..............GONE!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

My buds will get an inch or so long, then they fall off.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Mine cannot fall off because I dont have HG.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL......Monika

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thursday is trash day,and HG will be hitting it!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Its such a shame that such a beautiful brug has to be such a poor performer. Im sure soon there will be many more to replace/fill-in for HG.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Ah Root, poor HG. Are you giving him a going away party? Just think, he might have bloomed!!!(that's what I keep telling myself, but I'm seriously thinking that if mine don't bloom this year, they're compost)

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I forgot about this thread. You just giving up on HG doc? I have it but it's never bloomed for me. From the way ya'll talk I might as well forget it.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Mine has had one bloom this year and that was it's first one for me. It didn't bloom at all last year.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Not tossing in the towel, just this one,I have a nice straight one I am keeping, this one has always been a problem child, the other one does not get the bugs and looks good,so it is going to be the keeper.

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

I have one HG left and if it doen't do something this year it is out of here, well it is probably out of here anyway, I have to many others to worry about this one...
