New brug-aholic needs advise...

Washington, PA(Zone 6b)

This is my first year with brugs and the weather is finally
cooperating enough for my to bring my new brugs outside
but am not sure where to put them. (Than you Antoinette for sending me my babies!!)

*How much sun do they require a day?
*Do they prefer morning or afternoon sun?
*When do they need staked?
*Is it OK to spray them for spider mites while they are outside?

I already know not to put them in a windy spot I think.
Please help... I am Zone 6B...

Put them in the shade and away from strong winds when you first take them out. Leave them there for several days and gradually give them early morning sun and work it up to at least half day sun. You can grow lots of brugs in full sun in our colder climates. If you want very straight trunks, you should begin staking them right away. Sure, you can spray for mites outside and with the right insecticide, you can do it inside. However, the kicker is that you need to change types of spray after using one for three times so that the mites don't develope a resistance to it. Hope I answered most of your questions. Anytime you need help, just drop in and post. That is what friends are for. Isn't Antoinette a sweetie?

Nice talking to you Groovy. Hope to see you here a lot.

Oh man, I wouldn't know what to say to your zone 6.. I am kind of spoiled here in zone 8/9 sunset 18/19. The only thing that I do is keep them out of the sun..it gets way too hot here and fades even the leaves. Try inching it into you patio during the day and then bring in at night if the temps go down below 50 (I think). Hopefully someone in this zone can give some advice. Do you have trees in your yard? and maybe you can put them there until they acclimate. My desert experience is all I have, sorry if I did not help.

Oh gosh, We must have posted at the same time..

Thanks Shirley and Antoinette, you guys are the greatest!
I'm sure I'll have a thousand questions but for now, I just need my first bloom... I can't wait, I'm sooo excited! The brugs that you gave me Antoinette are doing very well other than fighting this spidermite problem. We are under-construction at our house and I had to crowd everything in one window so it was hard to get rid of them. I should have no problem now that I can move them outside. LOL about being spoiled in your zone, if it wasn't for my parents living here I'd be living in Zone 8 or 9 myself!

So under 50 degrees at night is too cold? How about on a porch?

In 6 b they need full sun.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Groovy, I believe from growing brugs in the USA that all brugs do NOT need full sun. In fact, most can grow quite well with half day sun and filtered shade.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Groovy, go slow and if they do not seem to like where they are, move them. They are very tolerant of all kinds of conditions which is why there is such a wide range of zones represented here. I have a huge Arborea that is in full bloom right now and gets no direct sun at all. It is and was under another tree all winter. Let us know how you do.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I had a Pink Favorite that hated full sun last year ... looked terrible during the day ... moved her to filtered shade and she did great after that.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Although I rarely have the problem here because of the usual high rainfall/humidity, I am fighting spider mites here now, too, because it has been so dry lately.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Dang Mary. That's too bad. I didn't have any last year, so I'm counting on this year being a bad bug year for me. Hope you get those little buggers.

I would hate to see what full sun would do to a Brug here in Arizona....it would COOK them. I have mine on my screened porch...morning sun. Jo

Hi groovy,

I am also in 6b/7a, right on the border. I find mine thrive in full sun, except for the variegated-leaved ones which require some light shade so the leaves do not burn. As space is limited, I also grow some brugs in partial shade where they grow and bloom, although more slowly and with fewer flowers.

If you keep the brugs out from under cover, where the rains will refresh them, this will help keep the red-spider-mites under control. Hot and dry is the bad combination.

Enjoy!

Oh my gosh! Washington, PA, little Washington...I was born and raised there. I could not believe my eyes when I saw that you were from there. We moved to avella when I was in 9th grade and I graduated from there. Married my high school sweetheart well I considered him my sweetheart but he didn't notice me till a couple years after I graduated. We have been married 28 years. My little brother still lives out brush run road. He is a constable. Small, Small, World.
My husband and I moved here in 1978. E-mail me maybe you know someone I know or maybe we know each other.

I sooo much appreciate all the responses! It doesn't surprise me though, you guys always are helping people. I think I'll do OK according to what you've all said. My spider mites are white though, I haven't seen red ones... I'm gonna go take all my babies outside now. Oooo I can't wait to get a bloom!

Sandy, I am actually from Pittsburgh, my honey is from Washington County. Brush Run road is about 15-20 minutes south of us! It really is a small world...

Hallo groovytree and welcome to Davesgarden. I live in Zone 6b and have to protect my plants from the Midday sun during the summer. They wilt because the humidity is too low. It slows them down in growth. They will thrive and bloom very well, when they have morning and afternoon sun.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Groovytree, you're going to love your Brug and will want more and more. LOL

Washington, PA(Zone 6b)

The name's groovytee but I think I like groovyTREE better, LOL. Thanks for the welcome and I KNOW I'll want more... Thanks for the advice. Toni
