Frost

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

We had frost this morning. I worked like a fiend yesterday evening putting Brugs inside and putting plastic over a makeshift shelter with the wind blowing 25 miles an hour. The winds beat some of the Brugs badly and I noticed where I had put the plastic up, the wind beating the plastic broke a few tips off of branches. I'm not sure which ones got broken. I won't know until I peel the plastic off today. I forgot all about my tomato plants. LOL The Brugs were more important.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Oh, Ada... I'm so sorry! I pray that you did not sustain too much damage!!! Gretchen

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Gretchen. I think everything will be okay except for the few broken branch tips.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Ada,
I hope you didn't lose all of your Tomato plants, but I think I would have saved the Brugs first too.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Ada, hope everything survived with minimal damage. Hope your tomatoes are okay too(but I too would have saved the brugs first)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I have more Tomato plants that I can put out if I have too. They're a dime a dozen. Not nearly as valuable as my Brugs.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Ada, hope that everything is ok. Yep, brugs are more important than tomatoes. If you can find the broken point on your plants, you can figure out which variety it is, and possibly root the broken pieces. My huge german shepherd whacked off a tiny piece of Rosa Uberraschung a couple of weeks ago with his tail, it's 2 or 3 inches long and much smaller around than a pencil. I stuck it in a glass of water, and found roots on it this morning.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Ronna, you bet cha, I'll be rooting them. LOL I found a piece that had broken off yesterday while we were carrying them inside (my helper) and I never did find which one it came off of but I put it in here to root. I guess when it gets big enough to bloom, I may know.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ada, so sorry about your brugs. Hasn't this been a crazy weather year?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, that is horrible. I thought you would be through with freezes by now. I'm hoping we are, but never get excited about putting things out until the first of May. Hope everything will be okay, including you. I'm sure you were pooped.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sylvia, this has been the craziest weather. We'll have 70 - 80 degrees and then a freeze or frost.

Shirley, I was ready for bed last night. LOL I think everything is fine. I still haven't walked down and looked at the tomatoes but they're the least of my worries.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Awww sorry to hear you had frost. I'm sure they will all kick back very quickly.
We are in for it tonight. I brought in the small plants. The large ones will have to stay. Hubby is out of town and a friend borrowed my hand dolly. We also have the wind. Ratty weather.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I took all of my big brugs outside yesterday and today they have been weather pruned. We have high winds and most of the leaves have been burned from it. No problem though....they will grow new ones and they might as well start getting used to it. Spring is very windy in Iowa. My back can't take moving them in and out all the time. Only when danger of frost comes along do I put the effort into moving them inside the garage.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

My weather has been crazy too. The last few days are much cooler with lows at 36-38 and the wind has been blowing like crazy. I didn't haul anything in, and didn't have a chance to look things over this morning. Hope they are all ok, they are just getting used to being outside.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Ada, these things seem to happen when we are growing brugs. It even happens to us here in TX. It seems that here is one last surprise frost. The last frost we had that was a surprise destroyed all the leaves on several hundred 2' seedlings and what a sad sight it was. Today they are full of leaves and growing taller. In another month you will not even see the damage that has happened and your broken branches will be many new plants. I know it is frustrating but everything will be ok.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I am sorry about the frost Ada. I also would have saved my Brugs first LOL!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Ada you did the right thing. Brugs are more important. Sorry about having such a late frost.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

This was the third time I've moved them all back inside. LOL I getting to be a pro at fitting them all in the greenhouse, garage and a makeshift quicky shelter. It's supposed to be almost 80 for the weekend. I even dug my elephant ears back up and potted them up. I had planted my Cup and Saucer vines and and my chocolate vine.I just covered them. The look fine just a little smushed from the covers. LOL

One thing for sure, I'm getting my exercise.

Gosh, what a lot of work. Bet you are bushed!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

It was a lot of work, Shirley but I had to protect my Brugs. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I don't blame you. I would too. The heck with the tomatoes.....well, no, I would protect them somehow too. I can't wait for the first one.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Shirley, I have plenty of tomato plants in the garage also. I checked the ones I had planted and they didn't look that bad from the frost. I think they'll make it and if they don't I have plenty to replace them with that are the same kind and size as those.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Here, when we have a frost warning, I leave the sprinkler on all nite, and it really does work, no frost damage. Course it does not stay cold very long here. You may have icicles!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I think I am going to get brave and move most of mine out tonight ,after work.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I have done okay with grouping all the brugs together and laying them down. They cover with a layer of blankets. they get a little tattered in the process but it beats lugging pots in and out.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Oh, Sue, what a great idea! I lugged plants back into the basement twice because of a couple of cold nights, laying them down would have been so much easier!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What we do for love! LOL. I have laid mine down also and covered them. It does work but make sure you raise them up as soon as possible for they will immediately start growing towards the light sideways.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I have to lay my big Nana and Ears down,I use a sheet or blanket on cold nights.

Mesilla Park, NM

Ada,
Our weather is really weird here too, just drops 40 degrees, just like that, then up again, I think that is why the brugs don't bloom so well, they try to go dormant every other week. (I think that is what the problem is)
