This is a rare native Hawaiian hibiscus called Kokio Ula Ula or St. John's Red hibiscus..it's a small flowered form..about 4 inch flower or less.Deep veination, and a dull finish.Almost extinct in Hawaii.I crossed this plants pollen to schizopetalus and have a seed pod thats almost ripe.Have no idea what kind of flowers will result.Thats the fun..I have also crossed Hib. Hyb. Vulcan to this plant..too early to tell if seeds will develop.

Rare hibiscus getting crossed...
Good luck. Hope the seeds will germinate and grow well for you.
Congrats! Hope it comes through for you. I couldn't get any H. schizopetalus crosses to take last year, either as donor or donee. I did get a 'Unknown Orange x Sunshowers' seed pod go to maturity. Managed to germinate 4 of the 8 seeds and then kill three of them. The fourth is doing well so far.
Good luck Carter..I have a good sized pod on Schizopetalus from an earlier cross with the kokio plant. You can actually see the seeds in the pod.
I'd love to see a picture of a tropical pod.....so I know what it is I am looking for when I finally try to pollinate
CC I'll try to take a pic next week.
Wow, that is cool Kyle.
Kyle, is that a schizopetalus pod? My unknown orange pod was more blunt nosed. Kinda shaped like a roma tomato, but only about 1½" long. But then again, mine only had 8 seeds, so I imagine that's why it was so small.
Carter this pod is on a schizopetalus plant.Looks like it might have several seeds in it.
Thanks Kyle
Wow,it looks like a brug bud!LOL
How many seeds do they usually have?
That pod looks big for only a few seeds
CC..don't know..I never had pods on schizopetalus before! :-)
LOL!
Too Cool Kyle,I have never seen that!
