Pigeon Berry, Bloodberry, Rouge Plant, Baby Pepper, Coral Berry
Rivina humilis
This Texas native shade loving groundcover has tiny white, pink and whitish pink blooms on racemes that can reach 8 inches in length. Birds love the bright red berries it produces. (San Antonio, Tx.)

The flower sprays sort of resemble some small hardy orchids that we have around here. It is really difficult to get pictures of those small blooms. Especially when the wind keeps blowing!
Susan, I will not admit to how many photos I took attempting to capture the tiny blooms in a relatively clear manner. I was not really happy with this photo, but it is about the best I could do. I guess I gave up. You are absolutely correct. The slightest breeze makes the blooms sway and thus, difficult to photograph especially because the racemes tilt at an angle. I took shots on many different days hoping the wind would not cause a problem. I used an umbella to try to block the wind which helped quite a bit. monterey gave me this idea. They blooms do look like teensy orchids. Has the Peruvian lily bloomed yet? Thanks for your comments.
No, the Peruvian lily buds shriveled up...boohoo. I mentioned it in another thread one day, and also the status of some other plants I got from you. I have 2 baby red yuccas, one lime is making leaves, 2 sweet olives are taking off, and 1 duranta. The firespike, plectranthus, and Brazilian plume are doing great, although not blooming yet of course. The baby cyclamens are coming along and I have 2 'Explosive Embers' peppers. The Chinese violet has not germinated. I gave some of the other pepper seeds to my fellow gardeners...hope you don't mind. I have too many plants now and did not need that many peppers.
Did I forget anything? It is so much fun growing new things. Thanks again for sending them.
Are the Peruvian lily leaves still okay? The Chinese violet probably won't germinate until much warmer weather. I didn't see the other thread for some reason. I am glad everything else is doing okay. I am glad you shared the ornamental pepper seeds with others if you did not need them.
Yes, the leaves look fine on most of the lilies...a couple died. Everything is doing great. It was 90 degrees today! I have got to start planting stuff and empty the greenhouse soon. We are still working on our roof...I will be so glad to get that done and get to my gardening full time, ha.
Gee, it has been hotter there than it has been here! I haven't accomplished very much lately ... feeling a tad yucky lately and can do only a little at a time. Are yu up on the roof tacking it down too?
Put the last big piece of roofing on yesterday, and celebrated! We still have to put the peak pieces on and some flashing, replace some siding here and there, but thank the Lord we finally got out from under our tarp roof. Supposed to get some rain this week, we are desperate for it. In addition to being hot, it has been very windy. Some of the spring flowers are looking sad and will go into early dormancy I guess.
It has been very windy here too and have had very few sunny days so my larkspur and other plants have not grown to their normal size for this time of year and will bloom late. I pray that your area receives rain.
It always looks so pretty to me, but I can't get this plant to survive. I planted one last September and it did not come back. Then I got one this about 5 or 6 weeks ago and it got either trampled or chewed by my dogs or some pest, and there is barely anything left. It does not seem to be bouncing back and I don't think it is going to make it.
LOL htop...I know how many times you've tried getting photos of the flowers!! I've been trying for ages and I still haven't gotten any that I'm happy with!
Good job on this one!
sweezel, I know you are disappointed with not having any luck with this plant. Maybe the last one will come back from the roots if they had time to develop. These are best planted in the spring. I had been trying to find some to plant for a very long time and was happy I found some. Be sure that they are in partial or light shade. Good luck to you.
Floridian, thanks. I think that this plant has been the most difficult to capture of all of the plants I have photographed. I kept trying and failing. I became an obsession. :o) Maybe one day there will be absolutely no wind and I will be able to capture a raceme that is in from top to bottom. Thanks for the comment. I don't feel like such a failure now. and am encouraged to try again.
