sick brug - help!

County Roscommon, Ireland(Zone 8a)

I noticed yesterday that my first ever brug is not well. Most of the leaves appear to have lost their greeness and are starting to curl. I was keeping it in the greenhouse and the other plants in there seem to be OK. I have had a look under the leaves with a magnifying glass and I can see a couple of very very small dots. The plant is well watered. Please help -I am a complete novice on brugs.

Prudence,is it getting enough light??it is off to a good start.

When you say well watered, maybe it is too much water. Try to let it dry out some, not completely, but more on the dry side than you are letting it get now. That will also allow it to make stronger roots.

Spider mites? you mentioned you noticed some tiny dots. I'm no expert, Sue but you might try washing off the undersides of the leaves and see if there is any improvement. I had a mite problem last month with mine... Gretchen

Root - it has been getting plenty of light as it was in the greenhouse. I was wondering maybe the sun has bleached the leaves? - it is a Brug Sanguinea.

Shirley - I have another one of these which is slightly bigger and very healthy. It did start to droop even though the pot was very heavy with water. I watered it some more and it perked up. The sick brug looks sick but not droopy.

Gretchen - I was wondering about spider mite. I have only had the greenhouse going a couple of weeks and it is my first greenhouse. Previously I just grew perennials which stayed outside year round and so I have never had to deal with this problem.

Thank you all for your advice. Do you think I should fertilise by spraying the leaves and what would you recommend. Also, in case it is spider mite, would washing up liquid watered down be any use? I know I'm asking lots of questions but I don't really know what to do for the best.

Many thanks to you all.

Sue, you can use dish soap in water or even just plain water. Mites like the atmosphere hot and dry, so any moisture you have around will help keep them down. I can't give much advice on Sangs. I've never been good at growing them. I think Calalily put a post on a recent thread for a homemade spray that might work. Not sure what it was for. It should be on the second page of posts. I'll see if I can find it and bring it back up for you to look at. I'm sure something in there would help with mite.

That was my first thought Monika,I have only grown one from seed, and the leaves sure looked different.

Yep, I didn't even connect on the sang and the leaves when I was looking. I'd bet the farm that you guys are right.

Hello all

I know Shirley sent me some brug seeds which I have sowed and are a lot smaller, but this one was the first I sowed and came from Seedrack as Brug Sanguinea with a pic of a red/orange flower on the front. Having no other brugs to compare it with, I was assuming that's what the plant was. I do have another 'sanguinea' which is looking very healthy so I will take a pic of that one, and see whether you think that one looks more like a sanguinea - I haven't a clue!

Oh ho, sorry Sue.. the experts have spoken... if it make you feel any better you're not the only one that thought you had sang.
Hmmm..let see... last year I bought seeds from T&M, grew these suckers for months. It become apparent soon enough that whatever it was, it sure wasn't a sang...But I can be pretty tenacious and I decided that I was going to see a bloom no matter what. Well, it grew to 10 feet, Y'd, had tons of buds and...it was time to bring it in, where promptly it lost all the buds and was too tall to overwinter in the house. So, I chopped it in half, rooted the Y'd part, and just when it started to put new growth I broke it. Well..I'm at it again...lol
Who wants to bet, that I'm growing the ugliest white sav there is? But like I said it is a mission now...lol

steel-dat - I had to laugh. Will the real sanguinea please stand up. I have taken a pic of the healthy 'sanguinea' which I sowed at the same time as the sick one. Let me know what you think this imposter may be!!??

I have not a clue, Sue, but that picture brings back memories. If we're not growing twins, they're at least not too distant cousins. lol

Oh well steel-dat - there's no such thing as a ugly brug so I will see what it becomes - I like surprises. It's in the unheated greenhouse at present 40F when I last looked and doing well. How did yours cope with the weather last year? I ordered the sang because they are supposed to be the hardiest.

Well, it was on a cold porch and refused to die. I think this one is more tenacious than I am. lol

I'll let you know what it is (if possible) when it blooms.

Good luck...
