Old Faithful

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't have any brugs blooming yet, but I took this picture of my old faithful yellow yesterday before the storm hit. As you can see it is already coming back strong.

Sure is looking good. What is the vine crawling across the top of the fence? Also the shrub with the blue/violet blooms? Very pretty.

Very pretty. I also want to know about the blue/violet blooms. They're so pretty.

What a pretty yard, looks like a great place to sit and relax. Thanks for sharing.

Shirley and Ahelms, the vine is a lavender trumpet vine (Clytostoma Callistegioides) and the shrub is a variegated weigelia. Actually, the blooms on the weigelia are a baby pink.

Thanks Sylvia. I just got rid of my weigelia last fall. It had become so big that it was pushing on the foundation of the house. I love the trumpet vine, but I'd bet anything it wouldn't be perennial to my zone. That's always the way it works. LOL! Very pretty. Thanks.

Forgot to say that Donna sent me some cuttings from a couple of vines and of course, the names of them are in the greenhouse, but maybe this was one of them. I know one was a crossvine.

In reading up on it, I think it is hardy to about 20 deg. Mine stays evergreen all year with shiny green leaves. The only thing that I hate about it is that it only blooms about 10 days out of the year. I like vines that bloom all summer, but they are hard to find.

minigrannie, lovely yard and I'm sure like Brugie that the lovely purple trumpet vine would not be hardy here. But we can enjoy your photos. Donna

Are we back to Morning Glories? LOL!!! Once Mandevilla vines begin blooming, they usually keep it up. Passiflora would be pretty there too. I'll bet you could find quite a list of great blooming vines to take it's place, but the foliage would look good on this one even without the blooms.

I think I purchased a purple Trumpet Vine from somewhere. LOL I've ordered so much, it's hard to keep up with it but til I get my new plastic, I won't be ordering anything. LOL Unless they take Paypal. It won't be hardy here either, Shirley.

The foliage is pretty and it doesn't sucker like my other trumpet vines. I have one that huge apricot flowers which are beautiful, but the darn thing comes up all over my flowerbed. I have another one that has pink flowers that doesn't sucker quite as bad, but roots along the ground. If I was a little better at keeping that one cut back maybe that wouldn't happen on the pink one. It is even more sensitive to the cold that the lavender one though. It usually freezes back to the ground each year and comes back from the roots, but this year it stayed green all winter. I've never tried the passion vines, but the children's service at church today was about caterpillars and butterflies and how the butterflies loved passion vines. I love butterflies but not caterpillars that eat everything.

Sylvia, a pink trumpet vine?? Wow. I need to come to SA and go plant shopping!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Very pretty Sylvia! We have that vine here also. It is so pretty when it blooms but I agree, it does not bloom long enough. We have a big one at work and the gardener cut it to nothing the week before it was going to be in full color. I was so mad!!!

Hmm..wonder if our yardman moved back to CA? I know he lived there before, and his crew seems to do the same type things.
