Looking For Gladiolus byzantinus aka sword lily

Columbus (Berwick), OH(Zone 5b)

I am interested in obtaining bulbs of this plant "Gladiolus byzantinus". However, I realize that my timing might be off. I am not sure when these bulbs can be lifted for division, or when they need to be planted. I am willing to negotiate trade to obtain the plant at the apporiate planting time. Thanx

I have these but not enough to share I bought mine a few
years back and they are just now starting to multiply. Here
is a place I found for you that is real reasonable on price,
but I think you will have to wait til fall.

I think these are getting ready to bloom soon, in the spring unlike most gladioli. Have some coming up myself for the first time, can't wait to see how they do. Will keep you in mind if they multiply well. John

I got some for a client here, fall before last. They were cheap, and bloomed wonderfully the following spring. The lady is now dead, so I haven't any reason to go back to see how they do this second spring.

By the way, Baa says these are not true "Gladiolus byzantinus" from this site. Nevertheless, I thought they were pretty!

I have a clump in my front yard that has been there for 30-something years (came with the house). I don't know how it's survived - for years it got mowed with the lawn and was not allowed to grow, plus it's gotten zero care. And the neighbor occasionally runs over it when backing his boat into his yard ...

Nevertheless, it is blooming now. =)

I really really want to dig some up and move them to my back yard where I can enjoy them, but I don't know if I'll be able to. They are near a live oak, and the tree roots might make it impossible. I'm going to give it a try in the fall ... if successful, I may have some to trade. But I'm not hopeful ... I've fought with these trees for too many years to be hopeful.

Thank you all for your input. I would appreciate any trades any of you might be able to offer. I have become infatuated with this flower ever since I saw it and read up on it.

debi... sorry. I should have checked it when I posted it. Here's the sequence, you must do it this way because the last links fail when I post them:

Then click on 'Miscellaneous', and then click on Gladiolus byzantinus

Baa's comment is echoed by the owner of "Old House Bulbs" who is fairly pointed in his comments about "imposters" sold by other bulb growers (he stops just short of naming names ;o)

Unfortunately, he also charges an arm and a leg for his "true" byzantines....

Don't know if mine are the 'real' thing or not, but they are like the picture in CWBYNCMH's picture on April 23rd. They are blooming right now. Pam
