I received a bulb? tuber? from a friend. Unknown variety. Since I haven't done these before, thought I would ask the planting depth. I potted it up because I have about 5 weeks before last frost. How deep should I plant it? I have it just under the soil. Is that okay, or does it need to go deeper? What about when it goes outside?

That is the way I would plant it. Actually, what I've done in the past is put the bulb in wet unmilled spaghnum moss that is just damp. It will start the ear growing and makes it easy to plant once you can get it outside. No worry about breaking off the roots, if there are any. Just worked well for me.
When it goes outside it should be planted at least a couple of inches deep. The instructions that came with my regular EE said 4 inches deep. Too me that is too deep, the two inches works without any problems.
