Oh so beautiful

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Very pretty Alice! I think I see some white bumpy stuff under the corners of the calyx. Do I? I had some of that on my blooms last year. I wondered what it was.

Have you had any ripened pods Alice? My pods are just sitting there for months. I peeked in one, and the seeds were still white!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm gunna have to break down and get one this year...its beautiful!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Alice I love Rothkirch's blooms. Have you noticed that she is any darker in the summer months?

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi Kell.. yes, I have that white stuff. A natural occurance, I believe.
This calex has some cold damage. We got to 20º nights again past week )o:
I have several pods on RK. All just sitting, too. Sould be ripe soon though.
Shirley, I have same blooms vary in colour in this plant. One day they will look dark, to light the next day. Or opposite. But I do believe summer was deeper colour.

I have had difficulty rooting RK. Fall cuttings rotted in winter.
Trying again.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Beautiful bloom. I'm still wishing for a plant.........

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Beautiful Alice ... hope you have better luck with you cuttings now.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I don't think it really matters if it gets dark or not. We know via Monika, that Rothkirch helps produce some beautiful hybrids. Your pictures are all great.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Great one Alice.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

It looks lovely...looks like I am just going to have to start a wish list of brugs! Thank you for the photo! Beautiful!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Its beautiful Alice! RK is a very special Brugmansia.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Me too Alice! I started 2 huge pieces last fall and they did great all winter. Then I brought them outside a couple of weeks ago and they promptly died!! I was so sad. And now I have nothing to cut off .

I hate to tell you all what I did to mine! Just before I took the hoophouse down, I noticed I had spidermites on one of the brugs. So I treated all of them with a dose of the rose systemic fettilizer and insecticide. All did great, even my little pots. I wa so happy for I usually burn a couple with that stuff.

Then just before I moved the brugs around the yard, I dosed them again. This time I burned 2 trees and my RK dropped every leaf!!! Totally bald with 5 big pods hanging down. Looks so funny. Well, it finally is putting out all new growth, but let me tell you I was so mad at myslef!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Gosh! This is a beautiful brug!!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Wow, close call Kell. Take care of that plant!

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Abutilon,

I have spider mites too and was thinking about using some of that systemic rose fertilizer/insecticide. I was worried about how much to use ...........

The directions of not much use as it's for large plants that are in the ground.

How much did you use on your potted plants ..... I was going to go with a light sprinkling on the top of the soil and work it in a bit. Sound like too much or too little?

I haven't gotten the nerve to try it yet........

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I think Kell uses it,and only a small teaspoon,I am sure she will answer your question Tclimber.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, I am the one that uses the Bayer rose systemic more for prophylactic care against mites. There is a newer one out also by Bayer that has an added systemic fungicide in it also.

It is the fertilizer that burns the plant Tree_climber. I water mine first so that they are not too thirsty. But because they act systemically, the plants need to drink it up to have it work. So 2 days after I water when dirt is just half dry, I apply it. I sprinkle it evenly over top of pot but do not let it touch the trunk. I probably put in 1/4 cup for pots that are 15 gallon or bigger. Then I water it well. If it looks like it is burning, I scoop out the remaining!

For 6 inch pots I use 2 teaspoons spread out over top.

I have killed 4 to 6 inch potted plants with it, but never big ones even if I burn them.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Root & Kell,

I think my pots are 6" or larger, I'll measure before applying any. I'll go light at first ............. unlike some of you guys that seem to have lot's and lot's of plants ... (someday I will), I only have a few plants, so would be heart broken if I killed them all.

I didn't realize that the time released fertilizer could still burn plants. I'm so glad I've been reading the postings in this forum. If not for all the wonderful information everyone shares here, I'd probably have killed all of my Brugs by now.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

From what I read on the Bayer systemic products, they do not kill or control spider mites. They will work on other pest, though, like white flies, mealybugs, aphids, etc, but do nothing for spider mites. At least, that is what mine said.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

The product I have is :

Bayer Advanced Garden™ 2-in-1 Systemic Rose and Flower Care Ready-To-Use Granules

It does list spider mites as one it controls/kills.

They have a lot of products and your right MaryinLA .... not all of them work on spider mites.

I sure hope this one works well ........... I've got 12 pounds of the stuff. (I can never pass up what looks like a good deal at Costco)

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I used Bayer Rose Systemic granules worked in soil of brugs, etc. last summer, never slowed spidermites/cyclimen mites down in any way.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Alice your Rk is pretty. I check mine every day now to see if it is starting to make a Y. My plant consists of 2 huge stems that are now around the 4 1/2 to 5 ft point and it has a third shoot coming from the bottom that is about 6 inches tall right now.
I found some super thrive at wal-mart tonight so tomorrow all of my gh plants and all of the brug plants will get a good watering with it.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Nice brugflower,

thank you for sharing:-)

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I have the liquids from Bayer, not the granules, though I have used the granules before. I rarely get spider mites because of the high humidity/rainfall here, but when I do, I just get out the avid and be done with it.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Avid is worth the money, as it really does the job on any bugs. Doesn't seem to hurt the plants at all and I have been mite free all winter. Let's hope my luck holds through the summer, as I really need to see some blooms!.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

This is one BEAUTIFUL brug flower. If I ever get one ,I can put it next to my white arborea like Liz sells , also if I ever get one ... .LOL
.........You should see the garden in my fertile mind , hahaha .....
OK, never mind the wise cracks you guys !!!

Love ya all

This one does kill spidermites, Mary. I have used it for several years now. It used to be made by Ortho until Bayer bought the patent. I have so many brugs that as soon as I see mites on 1 plant I treat them all prophylactically. It is so worth it to me for it has always kept them from spreading. I love it!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I found some aphids today on a couple of seedling. I washed them down but tomorrow I'll spray them all. I sure don't want to be bothered with them.
