most babied plant

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I don't baby too many plants, they are mostly on their own here. However, this one, I babied all winter. When the nights would get chilly, I'd cover it up. It is growing in the ground, filtered shade. I am now reaping the rewards! I love this plant! The flowers last for over a month.

this one is waking up too! This is the flower from the Kaempferia "Grande". The flowers wake up first, then the beautiful foliage. I always get excited to see these, they are the first of my gingers to wake up.

Lisa:

Your flowers are beautiful! I decided last month that my new gardening obsession would be terrestrial orchids so I'm definitely putting 'Big Charlie' on my "I need" list. Thank-you for sharing your beautiful photographs.

Those are beautiful Lisa. I didn't know the kaempferias bloomed before the foliage.
My nun's orchid survived the move in good shape, wish I could say the same about the kaempferias!

Lisa, I agree, just last weekend I got my first Nun's Orchid. It's creamy white with deep burgundy (almost brown) trim. Smell's wonderful. I have some other ground orchids that havent bloomed in 2 seasons. Trying to convince them they will like their new place in the yard. They have pink flowers.

I've also got a Nun's Orchid. lol, I didn't baby mine over the winter at all!! To be honest, I stuck it back in a (somewhat sheltered) corner of the yard and forgot about it!! It's blooming now, too. I pulled it from it's corner and stuck it on the back patio while it's blooming.

Cala, I think the stalks start emerging at the same time as the foliage or just after. By the time they get to blooming size (the stalks), the foliage has grown out. That's at least what mine has done.

Very Nice shot of the Nun's Orchid Lisa...

I didn't cover my nun's orchid on the last freeze we had and it got damaged, there is new green growth coming up from the roots, though. I will be sure and cover it next year when we have freezes.
