Finally found the "front door"!

Pleasant Grove, UT(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone! I feel like I've finally made it to the welcome mat by way of the back door (or greenhouse!) I joined the end of March but I've been so overly focused on a couple of forums (daylilies and iris) that I have just begun checking out all the others. I can't believe all the information!!!! And all your fun personalities are great, too! I was telling my mom the day after I joined about someone (can't remember name) who couldn't wait for her lamb's ears to pop up so she could "rub their fuzzy little ears and talk to them". When I read that I knew I was home! Great minds think alike.

I was born and raised in Southern CA and moved to Utah about 10 years ago. My husband and I moved in to our newly built home about 8 years ago, and after going through a huge gardening stupor (not knowing what would actually grow here and what wouldn't), and several pregnancies (we have 3 children) I finally got my hands dirty a couple of years ago and started planting things. And I can't stop planting things! In February I was so *itchy* for something to start growing that I picked up the ginger root my husband had recently bought to use for dinner...and I couldn't help myself. A few minutes later I was telling my husband over the phone that he needed to buy some more ginger on his way home from work. And when he asked what happened to the ginger we already had, I felt like I couln't hide my addiction any longer! I answered weakly, "I...um, planted it." So, here I am at plantaholics anonymous, except I'm not wanting to be cured. I'm so glad there's a place in this world for people like us! :P

Welcome. I had to laugh about you planting the ginger. Have you ever tried to grow those little green sprouts the onions get in the spring? So far no luck there. Being on the dry side of Oregon, my climate is similiar to yours, challenging. See you around the Garden.

Welcome to the best website there is for nearly anyone. Everyone here is so friendly and willing to help. We are more like family than just a group who happens to go to the same website frequently.

I do hope you can find a lot of plants that do well in your area. I'm sure MaryE and maybe Lenjo can help as they both live in that region.

I've done the same thing with ginger root, sometimes with success, sometimes without,

GOD bless and keep you and yours.

Welcome Claire! You're going to love it here. We are all interested in your garden and your plants. You'll see some fantastic pictures that will open your eyes wider than they are now. Things that you will just have to have!

Thanks, all! It'll be fun getting to know all of you!

Dori, did your sil go into transplant shock after moving from MI to S. Utah? That's almost like moving from the North Pole to the Sahara Desert, except the Sahara is actually more humid than Utah! Zion's Park and the surrounding area is beautiful, though. It's one of our favorite places. It's one of the few places you can visit year after year and never get tired of it. Have you been there? Had a friend from Hurricane (pronounced HUR-uh-kun.)

MaryE, no, I haven't tried to plant onions with green sprouts...yet! But I just planted almost all our garlic cloves! Do you know if you can eat the green shoots that come out of planted garlic? And if you can do you have to leave a certain amount so you don't kill the developing bulb underneath?

Leaflady, how long does it usually take before ginger will sprout if it's going to?

Hi Claire. Welcome to the garden. I'll bet you will have a ball here and you will probably pick up a few more addictions for flowers/veggies before long. See you around the forums.

Welcome Claire, it's great to have another daylily addict among us. My other addiction(no better make this one obsession) is true lilies, but I do love my iris also. Glad to meet you after having 'seen' you around the garden.
