ID for now...

Canadaigua, NY(Zone 6b)

I will post this in the ID forum when the boyfriend gets home with batteries for the Digital cam. But... I got a clipping today from a woman who can't remember the names of some of her plants. It blooms only a couple nights in a row one time a year. Usually in the summer. It has thin but long succulent type leaves that sprout more leaves off of the main one. It also has a smell to die for! Any help would be appreciated. TX Mere

That's a Night Blooming Cerus or maybe a epiphullum cactus.
If it's a NBC..it's a huge white flower, but it will be a longtime before you see it bloom with such a small cutting..they like to be root bound,too...there's a whole discussion some where on here with pics too..let me go get it.....
here ya go..

So MsC, can you say fairy godmother? I'm gonna go with orchid cactus. I saw the blooms last year and they were multicolored. I want to say pink, but can't remember. From the prev posts it's easy. I have some rooting hormone and seems it should be easy! Thanks a whole bunch! Mere

You are very Welcomed ..glad to help anytime.
Put it in a really small 2 inch or 3 inch mini pot..make a little hanging basket & let it grow a while... I think I would cut it up in smaller pieces to make several for a small pot...Each pievce should make a new plant in a while...just don't over water it.

Canadaigua, NY(Zone 6b)

Ok so what I did was... I got three of the leaves off of the main cut and dipped them and stuck them in a 4 inch pot, one on each "side". I put the main cutting in the middle if them. I would like them to stay together then MAYBE i'll cut them apart. I think it'll work. Think that'll do? tx Mere

It's epiphyllum oxypetalum has pinkish pipe shaped buds and opens to a white flower that you can actually watch them open, they open so quickly.Common name is night blooming cereus. :-)

Kyle, what is Selenicereus-macdonaldiae? Is it a night bloomer too? I have this one and one of the epi's.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Night blooming cereus is what this is commonly called, but as Kyle said, botanically it is epiphyllum, or orchid cactus, some people call it. Here is mine in bloom last year. It blooms at night, but not just one time a year, mine had a few flushes of bloom last year.

Well glad to have figure out ALL of it. Thank you all so much. Do you think that how I started it will be alright? I am very excited about it! Mere

Brugie selenicereus is a true spiny cactus..epiphyllums are succulents.Selenicereus are bigger flowered and have arial roots. Both are some what tree climbers in the wild. This old botanical print is a selenicereus.Flowers can be a foot across

Thanks Kyle. Is it worth keeping for the blooms? Looks like it could get pretty big and rambling.

You have such a big piece there, Mere, you could actually cut it up and root many plants from that one piece. I have never rooted it from the small rounded part of the stem the way you are, I have always stuck just a short piece of the broad "leaves" into a pot to root them.

Canadaigua, NY(Zone 6b)

Well that's what I did too, I cut up the leaf and potted the smaller babies from it. But I figure why not put some rooting agent on the stem who knows? The more the merrier I think. It might not work though. Mere

If I remember rightly, you are supposed to let the wound callous over before potting?

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Maybe you are supposed to, I don't know, but I never have, and have had 100% root for me. I think they root if you just look at them.

...*off to look at her cereus...*

Canadaigua, NY(Zone 6b)

The woman I got it from said that too! "They root if you look atem" I'm not worried. Out of four possible cuttings I'm bound to get. Cross your fingers... Mere
