Second year Datura

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

This is the second year for this Double Purple Swirl. I cut it back to about 7 inches and it has really taken off again. It is loaded with buds and these are the first to bloom this year... :o)

They are sure pretty but do not survive our long winter.

Dee: Very pretty! I don't think I have that one. Wonder if its similar to Black Currant Swirl -- I have it planted in several places? Also, wonder if it will come back for me... Thanks for posting the gorgeous picture!

I have always called this one Double Purple Swirl. The nursury here that carried them many years ago had them tagged that way, but I belive they are the same flower. Unless one of our experts says differently that is what I am assuming.....LOL....and you know what they say about assumtions.....

Sandy, some folks have reported having some luck rooting Daturas but I never have. I have tried many times and never got one to root for me. But try if you have some, what do you have to lose?

These are grown pretty much as an Annual and replanted each year. I know there is a cornor in town that is planted with them but I was told they allow them to just reseed themselves and they have been doing that for several years now. I went by there the other day a I saw there are about 3 or 4 left from last year. They were not cut back and really looked straggly.....

I would guess this area had 50 + plants in it last year. http://davesgarden.com/t/395418/, So it appears not to be unusual for them to live in this area more that one season. I have had the Double Purple before and it would live several years before giving up... this was before I knew they were suppose to die each year.

I do see where there are new ones coming up. The varitey planted there is the single White thorn apple Datura.....
Hope this answers your question ...... :o)
