eweed - here you go

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I don't know if you were able to get to the link I e-mailed you earlier since you're having trouble getting hyperlinks to work. Here is the question someone posted at http://www.f5hosting.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8040#post8040

Does any of this sound like what's happening to you? Can you provide a few more details about the errors you get and what you can/can't do?

Her question:

This is happening on my parents computer. I'm not very computer tech savy, but since I'm such an internet junkie, they assume I know what's wrong with the computer...

When my parents are online, after some time, the following message box will pop up:

'Program Error:

sychost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart program. An error log is being created.'

You can still surf the internet for a little while in the existing browser window, but you can't do anything like reply to emails, print, or open another browser. After some time, any browsing will just end with a 'page not found'.

They also can't disconnect from the internet. They have to fully shut down or restart the computer to get their phone line back.

They've ran virus scans and nothing has come up. It doesn't seem to happen when my parents are just on the computer, though they pretty much only use the computer for checking email.

Does anyone know what's happening? And is there anything to do to fix it? Or is the computer simply dying?

The lone reply to her post:

I think you mean svchost.exe, if it's svrhost.exe then you probably have the Phatbot virus.

You could try running srfc /scannow in the Run box, but make sure you have the Win2k or XP CD in the CDROM. If this doesn't work, you may have to do a clean install of your OS.

See if you can get more info, make sure they virus definitions are up to date also.
