English Stonecrop
Sedum anglicum
This plant has been growing in this same hanging basket for 49 years. I trimmed it back a few days ago. (San Antonio, Tx.)
English Stonecrop (Sedum anglicum)
Wow, 49 years! It looks great for it's age. We have a similar sedum here, it has yellow flowers...I have forgotten the species name at the moment. We use it in our Main Street containers in town with good success. It softens the corners and trails down over the simple wooden boxes. Thanks for posting yours!
Susan, I have a yellow blooming variety too. I don't know the ID either. It may be the same plant. The one here has smaller leaves and flowers. Thanks for your comments.
Hi, there, Oison. :o) I did have a very small patch of the kind that you have there in your container. It was also in a container; however, the container is attached to my fence. Unfortunately, my crazy squirrel who must have fallen out of his nest on his head ate all of it. He has now killed all of my bush type sweet peas and everything in all of the other containers attached to my fence. He became furious when we added a squirrel repellent to our birdfeeders by our patio and went on a rampage. I do have another kind that also has a yellow bloom; however, it has much larger leaves and does not appear a "dainty". I don't know if I had ever identified the yellow blooming ones. I'll check for you and let you know tomorrow. P.S. Does your plant turn a copper color in full sun? If so, it may be Sedum sexangulare:

I did upload a photo of Sedum sarmentosum, but its leaves are shaped differently: I don't have any of it.

Squirrels! Luckily for me, the worst I have to worry about are stary cats crapping in my garden, and sleeping on top of my daylilies. I spend a few hours tonight going through the Plantfiles (and Google), and I think I'll just have to wait a few more month until I;m sure of this thing's growth pattern. I might not have too long to wait, as there was almost nothing to it a couple months ago, and it's doubled three or four times over, since. I hope it beefs up though -- it's a bit spindly for my tastes. Looking through images of Sedum sexangulare on Google, it looks like that could very well be my mystery volunteer. If it is, thank you!
To be honest, I've always ignored this type of plant, and am now getting pretty intrigued by it. Seeing that picture you have up there is a bit inspiring, as it shows what can develop over time. It's also nice to know that the stuff can live down here. I was in Denver a couple weeks ago -- lost in the suburbs -- and walked past dozens of lawns overflowing with sedums.
You wouldn't happen to have anything left from what you trimmed off, would you? *bats eyes*

These plants need a bit warmer weather to really take off ... and they will. I will probably have some that I'm going to trim off in about a week or so. Send me an email to provide me with your phone number if you wish and I'll call you when I trim them. The ones that are blooming now are blooming a weird light green. I don't know what happened to the yellow blooming ones. I will have some of the white blooming type. I really love them.
