digging out a clematis for trade

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

I will be digging out a mature clematis for a trade. It is just starting to break dormancy. Does anyone have any tips so that I actually can get this plant out and on it's way. It is a Guernsey Queen, if that is any help.

Whatever you do I would do it quickly......all the clematis I have moved after they broke dormancy suffered for the rest of the year before re-establishing. I trim back much of the new growth so the plant isn't as stressed.
Maybe I've just done something wrong.............hopefully someone else will come along who might have better info or tips.
Good Luck! :-)

They have a lot of root so make sure you get as much as possible. I moved one last fall and it had more roots than anything. It was a new plant that I had purchased in the spring.
Now it is really doing well in a pot. I even pulled some loose and made another plant from it. So if you want to keep some for yourself there is usually enough root to do that.
I just kept mine in a pot all winter outdoors and the piece I pulled off I planted in the ground. Both survived and are doing really well.

Marcia - Shirley1MD is an expert on clematis and she's been giving tips left & right the last couple of days in the COOP forum on follow-ups from people who bought clematis in her coop last year. Hop on over there and ask her or email her directly. She really knows her stuff! Brenda

i have a related question-- i am moving in may and i want to take my passiflora. any tips on taking it out? and are they very sensitive to root jarring? and should i take it out now as it starts to break dormancy (already has a couple buds, yay!!) and put it in a pot, or should i let it grow for the next 2 months and then move it?

You may want to take cuttings from it now just incase the transplant doesent work. They should be rooted by the time you move
