Newbie Questions...Broken Branch?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I had a good size limb break off one of my Brugs lastnight,
so what is the largest size cutting I can make off of it?
Do I have to cut small pieces to get it to root or can I just plunk it in the ground & root a new "tree"?
It was covered with blooms so I was waiting for them to finish & I was planning to cut it back anyway...lol
Thanks for any help.

You can probably root the whole thing intact!

i've done that with big sucker branches

I agree with CC, you can probably root the whole branch.

Thanks CC & ahelms,
I think I will try that first and then if it looks really bad guess I can always do smaller cuttings of whats left.

Is it green or hardwood?they root very easy, you may want to lay it down.

It is hard wood about 2-3 inches in dia. and about 5 ft tall.
I'm also worried about where it broke from the mother plant as it left a huge open tear or scare. Should I treat that with something or will it just heal over with time?
I planned to trim this tree back hard, but I was patiently waiting for this flush of blooms to finish....well they are done for now.:>(
Any suggestions will be great.

I've always just left my scars alone, but you could powder it with a fungicide if you have any. So far I've been lucky, but as sure as I say this, I'll have one break and get a fungus in it this year. LOL!!

Thanks Brugie,
I have never worried about it before, but the more you learn the more there is to worry about.
I guess if it has a problem there are always more Brugs to take it's place..lol.
Thanks so much,
Lottie
