Aquilegia vulgaris

The blue and white colored blooms face upward on this compact columbine. The plant has an erect growth habit.

Thanks for posting this, Hazel. Columbines do quite well here, and I have added this to my list of things to look for...the upfacing blooms and repeat blossoming would be nice additions to the shade garden.

I do not have this one in my yard. They had them at Home Depot. I had never seen that had blooms so erect. The plant itself is more erect than most columbines. These types do not do well here because of the heat and they are grown as annuals. The best ones to grow in my location are the native columbine which are not as "showy" and are yellow. There is one that is yellow with a tad of red.

Hmmm, I will be looking at Home Depot first chance I get (have to go 50 miles).
Here is our native columbine: Not the greatest picture.

That is a very nice native one. Ours is a very bright yellow. The native one here with a little bit of red is not as bright of a yellow and I don't think it is as attractive as the solid yellow. The bloom does not show up as well at a distance.

I just planted 2 of these in my bed. Mine have the purple colored flowers on them. Is there any special care that they need for maximum flowering and propagation? I bought a few other colimbine plants also to enhance my flower beds. I sure hope they keep coming back every year. They are very pretty with unusual flowers that will really be good additions.

The best advice I can give you is to not water them too much. They will do better for you in your cooler climate than they do down here where it gets so hot.

I just planted the seeds for this yellow columbine last fall (its about 3 feet tall), I'm going to let the seeds fall to the ground so I will have more next year. I also have a crimson columbine which I plan on moving to this area in the fall.
I would love to have different colors as time goes on.

Wow, your columbine is lovely. I wish that they did better in our summer heat.

Htop you mean it is hotter there in San Antonio, TX than here in McMinnville, TN this year; we had a really cold winter and it already feels like the dog days of July. I wish I had every color of columbine I love the colors! Too bad they don't bloom all summer.

Prety hot here now. We had record breaking cold here this winter and I lost a few tropical plants even though I protected them. It would be sooo great if the columbines had a longer bloom time.

I would love to trade seeds of different perennials that I have for columbine seeds-I am new at Dave's Garden and I don't know how the seed swap works. I hope someone can update me on it and give me step by step details.
