Anyone know if hummers wait till they get to their final destination before mating?
Mating hummers
Male hummers stake out a breeding territory and wait for female hummers to pass thru. The female hummer selects which male she wants for her babies. Once she mates, she moves on to find herself a nesting site. She builds and cares for her young on her own.
ok hummer-nut. But can she mate, lets say in Ohio and migrate further north to build her nest? I know when they migrate in the spring they stop on their way for several days. The reason I ask is I have never seen the mating display in Mi.
Yes to your first question. They could mate in a southern state and she might fly to Canada before building a nest.
Females usually return to the area where they were born to make their nest.
I think rubys mate in all states east of the Miss. river. Just because you have not seen it does not mean it does not occur.
