'Devon Cream' Fallopia, Japanese Knotweed 'Devon Cream' (Fallopia japonica)
Do you have this plant in your garden/yard? I recently purchased one at a local nursery. It's stunning foliage caught my attention and the attached information led me to believe it would be an asset in my shade garden. Before planting I decided to research it on the internet only to find it is often referred to a "invasive", "weedy". I want to put it in a corner spot along with existing hostas and ferns, but am hesitant since it may overgrow my beautiful existing plants. What are your thoughts? Is it easy to remove if I do go ahead with my original planting locale? or should I find a vacant spot and let it take over? I have never seen one in anyone's yard so I'm not sure of the overall size once it is fully established. Permanent planting pending your reply...
This is a new plant to me as of a couple months ago. It has done very little except just sit there for the past weeks. Perhaps it is building a HUGE underground root system and will engulf my greenhouse next spring, but I doubt it.
I've grown three of these plants in southern Wisconsin for 4 years, one in sun and two in partial shade. The plant in sun is larger than the more shaded ones, about 3 ft x 3 ft. They have not been at all invasive in ordinary garden soil. Perhaps three times over these years, a single shoot has emerged 6 inches from the base plant. I always seem to have someone wanting one so they've just disappeared. I'd be pleased if it were a bit more willing to spread.
I,ve grown one of these for 3 years in part shade in Z4a, Ottawa Canada. This year it is infected with a fungus that turns the leaves pink. I will spray with a fungicide and possibly move it to an almost full shade area where it will get less water. This has been a wet year and it is near a rainbarrel where it gets overflow.
I've grown this plant for over 7 years now, always in my foundation plantings. In the back of the border. It's dies down to the ground in the winter and comes back more beautiful than before. It gets very tall over 8.5' and almost as wide at the top. It narrows at the bottom. I've had it in several locations. It's prunes easily, but it does send out a lot of runners. Over 10 feet away. They are small and easy to tearout. I use it by the east wall on my home because of the wide overhangs on my house. It smells wonderful at night when it's cool outside. The flowers that cover the plant are small and creamy white; very thick. They drop off like tiny brown seeds on the ground but they don't produce plants, only the runners. They transplant easily and I just love them. But I have never tried them out where they could really take a hold. I did see a man "plant nerd" on TV and he has them in the shade garden and loves them too. He planted them with Tavoria and Indian Pinks (Spigelia) and hosta's... beautiful. I can't say enough about it. I'm going to move some of mine out and see. He acted like it was a breeze.
