I'm new here and introducing myself

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

Hi all,
I just recently found this new Hoya forum and am excited to share my experiences, learn from yours, and meet new friends who love these plants as much as I do. My Hoya collection is mainly made of up cuttings I've bought, was given or traded for and a few mature plants.

I'm a SAH mother of three kids under the age of 5 and my hobby helps me unwind. I've fallen in love with Hoyas for many reasons and am always happy to make friends with others who share this interest too. I recognize Norma and Milan from another forum and if there may be others here that I may know with a different nickname from else where, let me know. Hope to see you around here more often,

Hi Gemila
Welcome to the Hoya forum. I'm a hoya nut myself. I grew my first one about 15 years ago and I have been hooked since.

Chello and welcome. I have two hoyas so far but hope to add to that this year. I bought a Hindu rope two years ago and it bloomed the first year but nothing last year, so I am hoping that it will bloom this summer.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I posted my intro here because Hoyas are my main interests. I love tropicals but since I don't have a greenhouse and live in zone 5, I must grow all of mine indoors during the winter months. I've tried to limit myself to only collecting Hoyas but there are so many
more becautiful plants out there but they are still mainly what I collect.
Just today, I accidentally found the Welcome forum which I guess its where I was supposed to post to introduce myself. Please bear with me. I've got lots still to learn and am trying to read as many older posts as I can. Thanks again,
Gemila

Do you happen to live in Ohio? The reason I ask is because I live in zone 5.

Hi Gemila, welcome to Dave's Garden and the Hoya Forum! I'm totally hooked on Hoya but fairly new to growing them. Presently, I have only four types- they are all small plantlets from cuttings - looking forward to my first blooms. What types of Hoya do you have?

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

Wind, I live in Indiana just south of Ft. Wayne.

Sveiks, thanks for the warm welcome. I've got quite a list now but they are mostly cuttings and am still waiting till they bloom so I can confirm if the names I got them with are correct. The ones I have confirmed are;
H. linearis (currently growing two peduncles)
H. lacunosa (has been in bloom since Dec.)
H. tsangii (has been in bloom since Sept.)
H. brevialata
H. obscura (just got done blooming)
H. sheperdii
H. nummularioides
H. multiflora (getting ready to bloom again)
H. multiflora (variegated) (getting ready to bloom again)
H. thompsonii (this one bloomed and is only a two node cutting)
H. serpens
H. curtisii
H. unknown that I bought as H. cinnamomifolia but once it bloomed I was able to tell it is definately not correct. I'm waiting till it blooms again to get it ID'd.

Stoneham, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow, that is quite a list! Mine are few and yet to bloom:
H. publicalyx 'Pink Silver'
H. publicalyx 'Reva'
H. coronaria (I have two but one's leaves are rounded and bronzy when new - the other is green and rounded but with a point at the tip?)
H. multiflora

There are many Hoya on my wish list H. bella, kerri variegated, indian rope, serpens ... who am I kidding - I haven't seen a Hoya I didn't love :)

Better late than never LOL,
Hi Gemila and welcome to the DG Hoya Group.
Seems I'm slowly seeing more people from the outside DG Hoya Groups in here :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome to DG. I have a question about the arbor you are standing under. Are those all antlers? Wow! Where was that taken.

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

Jan, those are elk antlers. DH and I went to Jackson Hole, WY for our honeymoon. In the center of town they have a 4 block park. At each corner of the park they have each arbor made from the shedded Elk deers antlers. I still think, "how they'd do that?'' when I see the photo. I don't get my picture taken often and this one is one of my favorites.

Susanne, I'm currently working on my photo album. I lost all my stored pictures in our last computer so I'm retaking them again but now will burn them on CD instead. I'll post my album as soon as I can.

Valley Village, CA

I thought that was some plant.

Gemila it's about time you found us here, I started this forum for people like us who needed a place to hide and have a decent discussion without being jumped all over.

I think you will like this group, nice down to earth humans, and very civil. We are all lerning from each other at this time.

PanamaCreel is the most experienced here I think, so I always wait for his responses, but he better learn more quickly before the others catch up, we are all chasing him. ;O)

I would also like to join this forum, if I may. We recently sold two condos (Ohio and Naples) and bought a little house with a nice big yard here in Naples. Now I need to become educated about gardening in Florida. What a challenge!!

My Hoya collection consists of one which I split in half recently and now am training up two trellises. The original plant was a cutting from a 70+ yr. old lady who lived next door in the early 1960's. I potted it in a huge container and it climbed up a cedar post all those years til we moved. I brought a cutting to Naples and it has now become the split plant growing up the trellis. P.S. My sweet friend is long gone and I am now 70+ myself and the hoya grows on!!!

Originally the plant had a wonderful fragrance when it bloomed, but this cutting has lost that. Any ideas why or what can be done to restore it??

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Welcome plumbago! That's a really neat story about your friend and your hoya. I certainly can't help you with Florida gardening or your hoya, but I can welcome you to the group! :) Hope to see you around more.

Naples, FL(Zone 10b)

It's mind boggling to read all the varities some of you have. Please tell me where you verify the names. I am so busy landscaping that I forget to log on. Oh! Well! soon it will be so hot that I will spend more time on the computer and get educated about hoyas.

Gemila, You are such a little person!!! I missed your posts from our other "life". Keep me posted when you find out what that "noid-cinnamomifolia" is. That is one of my very favorite hoyas. I'm happy it turned out "not" to be cinnamomifolia.

Gemila...were the flowers deep red/purple? The leaves of H. cinnamomifolia and H. purpureo-fusca look SO much alike...
