Puttin' an army to work

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Well, ok, turning them loose to have a banquet on aphids and whiteflies. They arrived today, spent a few hours in my refrigerator getting calmed down from their trip, and were released in the greenhouse at about sundown. I was spraying with garlic/rubbing alcohol spray, but the pests had gotten ahead of me before I knew I had a problem. Ladybugs seemed to be lots more fun, plus they will reproduce themselves.

They were sprinkled around wherever I was seeing pests, the rest of them will just find their way out of the bag by morning.

Very interesting Mary, will want an update on how they work out. I keep thinking about a small green house but haven't done anything about it yet. For one thing too many things going on right now, will have to wait until fall.

Where did you buy Lady Bugs [I tried to buy some earlier this year and didn't find any]-

Mine came from Territorial Seed. Gardens Alive also has them. The instructions said they would be agitated from their trip and to put them in the referigerator to calm them down, then release them in the evening. I bought 1500 for about $8.95. They went right to work and cleaned up the bug problem. Soon the eggs they lay should hatch so I will have plenty of little helpers for the future. I've been seeing a lot of romantic encounters so I am sure they are thinking of families. The aphids and whiteflies are getting difficult to find. A few probably have escaped through the vent system but I'm still seeing a lot of ladybugs.

I have bought mine [in the past ] from Arbico by the pint --they told me a sad story about a fire in the Arizona mountains where theirs come from--I am glad to know someone else has some--the Lacewings they suggested as a substitute did nothing--I accidently got rid of my Aphids by bringing in uncomposted manure-full of biteing stable fly larva, and about the time I had resigned myself to spraying the man-eating pests, I noticed they were eating the aphids,so I endured the fly invasion --they did destroy almost all the aphids------Anyway --I will be ordering more Lady-Bugs--Michael
