I recently saw these on "Gardeners Journal".
I was wondering if anyone has any experence w/ Clematis viticella in a Zone 6 situation.
Actually any zone will do.
Vigor, variety, etc.
Clematis viticella
I have C. viticella 'Polish Spirit' growing in two locations. It is very vigorous, I just finished pruning them. They are nicely hardy here in my zone 5 area. I also planted C. viticella Purpurea Plena Elegans that i bought through the DG co-op last spring, so it is new enough that i can't comment on it. Hope the above is helpful. Donna
Donna,
Thanks.
Those are two I've been looking at....
What growing conditions, height and how well did it bloom?
Ric
When I lived in TN I had lots of different viticellas. I loved them, they were so easy to grow.
Cala,
Your climate there was about like ours.
I'm hoping they do well here also.
Can you do Clematis down there in TX?
The Crocus, Forsythia and early Daffs are blooming here now.
Homesick yet?
Ric
I only ever grow the viticellas and love them. I've just cut back the old growth and green is very much in evidence. Easiest of all to grow for sure and here they bloom well into September.
I have Etoille Violette and Polish Spirit at the moment. Here is one on the left of the picture but not in bloom. This is early in the season at home in England.

Well Ric, I think I can grow a few of the clematis. I will have to check my clematis bible before ordering though.
Now, let's see......daffodils and crocus I can buy in pots, I can't grow forsythia but have tacoma stans blooming now(and bottle brush, cape honeysuckle, brugmansia, hibiscus, oleander, jasmine, mandevilla.......)
hee hee, are you wanting to move to zone 10 yet???
ah Susie you are mean....... But you know those viticellas of Susie's have a nice new home. I sure hope they like it. lol Susie we can send ya pictures of the spring blooming things you can't grow and you can torment us with all the things you can grow we can't. lol
I GIVE! LOL!
It's got to be getting beautiful down there!
I'll send Hosta flower shots when you're in the dead of Summer as a treat though!
Where are you postin' pictures these days?
Ric
Henry10, sorry to so slow in answering, just too much gardening to be done right now. Polish Spirit is very free flowering. I have one growing up a dead tree ( I planted it for framework), and just covers the whole thing. I prune them down to 12" or so above ground early spring. I am growing about 20 different varieties of Clematis. Donna
