I have been lurking and watching this forum for some time. I want to try these plants in the worse way!! I am building a retirement home on 2 1/2 acres. Tiny house --- but would like to learn to grow these to line the drive way.
Where do you all buy your seeds/plants?? Thank you for any information/tips you can give me!!
Newbie Seed Ideas
Happyoma I havent seen any brugs or brug seeds anywhere in our area, Im not possitive if its because I havnt really looked or they just arnt here. I even checked Homestead Gardens wich usualy has most everything, nadda. I have some cuttings and seeds that I got from other members just this year and I know there are places on the internet you can purchase them too. Since you and I arnt that far from each other you will need to bring them in every fall and from whta Ive learned here water, water, water, fertilize fertilize fertilize. LOL
Im sure you will get more and better info from some of the others here who have alot more experience than I do but its fun to start.
Congrats on the new house, that has to be a great feeling.
Happy for you to be building a retirement home. WTG..
Brugs are not hardy where you live. They will need to be dug up, or cuttings started in the fall to bring inside. You are going to need a GH or have rooms to keep them growing, or basement/storage to keep them dormant over winter.
Many here will have cuttings, or rooted plants, later in season.
Happyoma, these are two places you can purchase Brugmansias.

Great looking house. Boy, I would start with just a few and if you plant them in the ground you might want to reconsider lining the drive after you try digging them up. They are pretty hard to dig out. Of course, I'm old and petunias are hard to dig out for me. LOL!!
I have some cuttings... They are rooted already! Email me..

Welcome Happyoma, I am not a very experienced brug grower, but there are many in this forum who are and I am sure will be glad to advise you.
Nice that you are building a retirement home, and looks like you have lots of room for planting. I also garden on 2 1/2 acrea in my 5 1/2 acre property. Have lived in WA all my life and in this particular location almost 9 years. I have a small greenhouse attached to my garage, where I grow my brug seeds and many others and try to keep some brugs over winter. You will not be able as you have already been told be able to leave them in the ground over winter.
My daughter lives in Fairfax VA, and I hope to get to her place once a year or she comes out here. Again welcome, rutholive aka Donna
Mini, I'm glad you had some cuttings. My brugs are almost all from cuttings last fall and I just didn't have anything to offer. You are a sweetie to help out our new friend.
Hallo Happyoma and welcome to Davesgarden! Your home looks very nice and there is lots of room to plant Brugmansias. Hibiscus mentioned it already that you need a frost free place for the winter.
WOW!! Thanks for all the information. Dravencat I am living in Laurel until the house is ready. May be mid - little of May or June. I am in an apartment and am going stir crazy with out anything to grow!!
I will post pictures as I progress - hopefully Brugs in bloom!!!
Brugie Yes.. all my brugs came from cutting last two years and last year too.. Now I have the cutting to share with newbies.. but I am still looking for few names that I would like have in my collecting..
You know, the list is never complete. Once I think I have everything I want, another beautiful hybrid is pictured here on Daves and then there I go again. I'm beginning to get so I enjoy growing from seed a lot. It is always a surprise when they bloom.
It is so great that Minischnuz is sharing her brugs with me. My husband thinks I am crazy to feel this way about a plant. But I tell him to look how excited he gets when he catches a fish (that he just throws bad in the waterLOL).
I like both. I love my plants and I love to fish, but if I had to choose, it would be plants. I can buy plain old fish anytime and they smell worse than plants do. Don't feel too bad Happy, my DH doesn't get excited about my plants either. One day he told me he had about had it up to here with brugs. That was okay....I didn't say a word, but the next time he said something about Martha Stewart, I said "ya know what? I've about had it up to here with Martha". He has never said a thing about not liking my brugs since then and even waters the ones in the shop for me. Of course, now I have to listen to him talk about what Martha cooks on her program each day. LOL!! I don't fix those recipes, either.
I remember living in an apartment, I went nuts. I ended up bumming some green bean seeds from my sis and planted bush beans behind the bushes in front of my windows to have something, undortunatly the squirrels lked them too.
Oh Happy my Dear. As a serious fisherman and gardener...I don't know what to say...Have you ever stalked and then caught exactly the fish you set out for? You need to. Plants can be a good high and you get to do it everyday(like it or not!)LOL. 2 different ballparks.
Now you've made me think about and compare the 2 addictions or are they therapies?
I'm now more of a mess than I was before this post. Oh the agony and confusion...
Happy, welcome to the garden!
I will be fun to watch your place grow:)
Hi Erica!
Good to see you back at DG!! We've missed you, but I know that you were very busy with selling your house and then moving into an apartment. Your new retirement home looks great and please post pictures so that we can see the progress that is being made.
I have Brug seeds and some cuttings that I'll be happy to share with you. We all are itching to get out in our gardens and start planting. We ALL have Spring Fever!
Please send me an e-mail and we'll work out the details.

I will have six huge Brugs come mid july (providing I don't - Yikes - kill them before then LOL LOL) and the seeds will be used in my new green house when that arrives.
