Viola 'Sorbet Blackberry Cream'
Viola
These are planted in a small oblong container which sits in a miniature wagon in front of geraniums. Being small plants, they can be used in many different types of containers. They brighten any spot in which they grow.
Viola 'Sorbet Blackberry Cream'
I agree that violas are some of the loveliest little blooms...oh to be a leprechaun...we could really be eye to eye with these beauties!
I was collecting seeds from these, but just read that they probably will not come true because they are hybrids. This puzzles me because I have seen seeds for sell and have read comments about how they reseed themselves. Mine have never self-seeded in the past probably because of heavy mulch. Maybe I am confused and the seeds were for the Johnny Jump Ups.
My violas have never reseeded either. But I am a compulsive deadheader, so that may be why. It is puzzling that they sell hybrid seeds...I guess they cross the parents each time and then hope the genetics are the same. I pulled out 60 hellebore seedlings yesterday and don't know what to do with them! I have their roots wrapped in a damp rag for now. Did you decide if you want any? Let me know if you do. If I pot them up it will be this fall when I send them, but I am not sure I want to babysit them all summer...
Susan, I have never grown these ad know practically nothing about them, but then I have bought plenty of plants that I knew nothing about. They are sure interesting looking plants. I'll be willing to adopt some to take them off of your hands when you are ready to disown them.
I discovered why I could never gather seeds from my violets. I always looked for them after the blooms died. They do not make seeds from opened blooms! They usually produce seeds in the fall from "blooms" that never open. I have seen those and wondered why they never opened. Now I know. Boy, do I feel dumb. I had reseached the violet for quite some time and had never run across this information until the other day.
Hmmm. I also noticed the fat seed pods near the ground and wondered how the stem shrank down. So I guess the plant has female flowers at the base, and the showy ones are male?
I think I will send you a vial of the hellebore seedlings. You can pot them up til fall and then maybe they will be big enough to set out. Mine are under decidous trees, so they get sun in winter and spring, then shade in summer and fall. Very tough once established. The mother is the pink one I have posted at DG. I will send plenty in case some die...If they all live, you can plant a colony.
That is a very nice plant, Susan. Seeds will be fine. The violets I was referring to are the sweet violets. I'll have to research your question and get back to you. I have a doctor's appt. today so I have to run.
