wild viola
Isnīt it great when we can make wild plants to bloom under our care? Very cute violet you have there.
Hi goldenfish ("kingyo"? ;)
"Harima" is a hybrid between "Sumire" and "Ariake-sumire", or Viola mandshurica X V. betonicifolia var. albescens.
You can find both in Igari Masashi's "Nihon no Sumire", Yama-kei, Tokyo, 1996.
BTW - we haven't met before -Welcome to DG!
(Now I won't be the only lonely resident of Japan here! ;)
I also have Viola chaerophylloides, but mine is var. sieboldiana, or "Higo-sumire" Nice, eh?!!
Hello Lophophora,
Thank you for sharing the scientific name of Harima violet with me.
Mr. Igari is famous as a viola specialist , isn't he? And my friend have that book! I'll have it shown.
My violets started to bloom these days. I love this time:)
Are you working in Tokyo? I'm glad to know there is another member in Japan. Thank you!
Kingyo is gold fish, right? I should have named me gold fish. hehe.
Yes - trying to survive in the big city...
Where in Tottori-ken do you live?
Here's a pic of the most common violet here in suburban Tokyo:

My garden is covered in them this week!!!!
Does it grow in the Chugoku region too?
I live in Tottori city. Banausic place but region richly endowed with nature:)
Viola grypoceras are everywhere about here. I love this because this flower herald the arrival of spring! Viola mandshurica is also common in here. I'm going to start some kinds of violet from seeds in this spring.
Good luck with the seeds, and post pics pls!
oh wow oh wow.
i have been trying to find some wild viola seeds here in the Usa but no luck. the ones you have posted are so pretty. i am in love with the peach colored one. I think customs would hate me if i ever could get to Japan. I would be bringing so much back.
