My Arborea is so pregnant!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was just outside taking its picture and the scent was so heavenly. I usually don't notice brug scent unless I am close but this was so fragrant thru out the yard.

The winter hardly upset it at all. Its leaves got on the yellowey side but now coming out nice and green and is full of buds and pods. It is so big it has grown up into my Abutilon tree.

So this is my question, I have been busily pollinating it with all sorts of colors of sangs and my pink Vulcanicola. What will I get???? Mostly whites or can I get lots of pink or yellow or bicolor Arborea seedlings?

Very pretty, Kell. I purchased two cuttings at different times that was supposed to be Arborea and neither of them are Arborea, I don't think. The leaves sure don't look like Arborea.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Kell is the scent to strong to have it as a inside plant? It will be to hot for it here in the summer. If so I guess I can always put it in the back bedroom where it will get sun. I got it in the fall and it is about 2 feet tall now.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh what do they look like? These are kind of furry! I was wondering if this also only likes the cool weather like sangs.

And also if it self pollinates. I guess I could pollinate it with its own pollen and see! LOL. I did use Arborea pollen on my yellow sang the other day just to see if that way worked.

Hi Donna, I wish I could remember the scent now that I am indoors. It is an odd scent. Very sweet. I want to say like sweet vanilla. Hard for me to be able to place it now that I am indoors. It may be too much indoors but then just take the flowers off, as painful as that would be! LOL! It did bloom all winter, though much less.
The flowers are on the small side but very perky. I bet you will love it! And the pods are so sweet. Fuzzy little green balls.

Kell, the leaves are different on both cuttings and if memory serves me right I purchased both cuttings from the same person. One of them, the leaves are slim narrow. The other one looks closer to an Arborea but still have my doubts about it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Maybe they are offspring? Only way to tell is let them flower I guess. The leaves are distinctive though. You might have something even better!! LOL

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I don't know, Kell. Only time will tell. LOL

I love the look of those seed pods. An arborea full of pods with some white lights at Christmas could take the place of my Christmas tree.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

kell, has this arborea set on pods before WITHOUT pollination? On most B. arboreas, you have to remove the anthers before opening of the flower to prevent self pollination.
You may expect a large variety of colors, from yellow to red, pinkish apricot like Mobisu or even lilac.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Ohhh Kell ... to think a possiblity of one like Mobisu (Love that one). WTG.

Well, if you really get stuck, let me know Ada.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

well that is too cool!!

No, it never has. It only sets them where I have pollinated. Lots of times though I open the flowers to pollinate. I need to go out and pollinate more today with a bicolor yellow and orange sang and my all yellow sang. Both are blooming.

So tell me please, is an arborea more forgiving of living in the heat than sangs?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

arboreas do better in the heat than sanguineas. I would place them in the half shade.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I had my arborea in morning sun until about 11. After that it had shade from a maple tree. It did well until the temps got over 90 degrees and then it was not a happy camper. This year I will give it more protection from the hot wind and see if that will help. It bloomed once during the heat and not again until very cool weather.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well then, all my crosses may do well for all of you guys who live in the warmer areas.

Brugie, do you love your Arborea?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, I would like it more if we had a good summer and not so much heat as last year. I love the shape of the blooms and the fragrance. I like that the blooms are small and the calyx is so low too.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So tell me what the smell is like to you. I was trying to describe it last night.

edited to say PLEASE!

Oh gosh, that is a hard one. Maybe like a jasmine. I've tried to figure it out because it does smell like something I've smelled before. Now, I have to have my nose up a bloom to remember the smell and that will be a while.

Edited for spelling jasmine wrong. Arthur is really working on my fingers this spring.

This is one I do not have. Beautiful and supposed to smell good too? It has everything!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I don't know how to discribe it either...but its my favorite!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, if you get any regular arborea pods I could use a few seeds.I don't have any arboreas..my seeds from up north didn't come up. :-(

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

B. arborea has a very sweet fragrance while the selection Engelsglöckchen and her progeny have a 'soapy' fragrance.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Good info. I can't wait for her to grow up. I may put her next to the front porch on the south side so she gets just moring light and then shade from the maple tree. If it gets to be to much then I can bring her in.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Okay Kell, if these will do well in my area, add me to your list. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

We hope they may Ada!

Hibiscus, I would not call this flower beautiful. It is small and perky. Kind of like Katie Couric! I have a pot full of rooted cuttings but am afraid to send plants now until I am sure I do not have the crud!

Kyle when you say regular arborea do you mean ones that were self pollinated so they will be the same as the mother? So far I just have mixed seed pods from sang pollen on her. I could pollinate one flower just for you with arborea pollen if you want plants that are identifcal to the Mom. Let me know. I have lots of buds coming. Did the Arborea I sent you survive?

I just picked a pod this AM because the top looked like it was yellowing. The seeds were not as dark as I would like but I think they are viable. They are huge seeds. I do not remember them being that huge lst year. It is Arborea X orange sang. Do you want some of those?

Do the size of the seeds change depending on the pollen donor?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

kell, no the arborea you sent froze last fall when all the other plants froze in the garage. :-( I just want a few seeds of the regular white arborea.(self pollinated) I might get reallyyyyyy lucky with the few yellow sanquineas this fall and might try crossing some with arborea. ((Dreaming again))) LoL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have crossed my Arborea to my yellow sang, both ways!! I will pollinate a flower tomorrow Kyle so you can have your own pod!

Too bad about your freeze. must have made you sick!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, I lost many things..but I didn't throw any plants out yet and a few have starts at the base of the plants. When I move everything out for summer I am doing an inventory....the I WILL know what I still have!!LOL Like thats possible!LOL
