House & Garden show loot

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

went to the home & garden show yesterday in Syracuse.really disappointed at how little garden type stuff was there. It was mostly hot tubs(Spas) big tractors(which I need but can go to a farm show to look at them ) and windows and doors(which I need but can't afford,at least till I quit spending so much on plants)

the Orchid society had theirs booth and I had a tough time decieding......walked away ,came back and ,yup, the on I had wanted was gone....so I had to buy 3 to console myself......actually , Chuck wanted the yellow one,and I couldn't decide between 2 so I got them both,LOL

I love variegated AV's and Chuck liked one and I like the other....soooooo had to get them both

and the chicken gizzard plant I had to get just cause of its name. There was another variety but it was for display only, none for sale.....

all in all I controlled myself well........

CC, they are beautiful. Of course, if you got too many, you can send that purple orchid to me!

Looks like a good day for you! I had some of those Chicken Gizzard plants. They're a lot like coleus and very colorful.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

yEah..whats up with these shows being mostly spa's windows, and mowing equipment ????LOL

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

It's funny that you should ask that. We just had our home & garden show in Tulsa a couple of weeks ago. I didn't go, it's pretty much as Karyn described theirs, if you go once every three or four years, not much has changed. They talked on the news about the fact that 100 vendors were on the waiting list for a booth, and when my DH mentioned it to someone he knows who HAS a booth, they said that they were on the waiting list for NINE YEARS! So, it's like joining a fancy country club, someone has to die (or close their business, in this case) for anybody else to get in!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

What gorgeous plants! You did GOOD!! :~)

It's very interesting to note that ALL Home & Garden Shows are basically the same, whether you attend them in New York, Maryland, Kansas or California! The emphasis is on home improvements, NOT gardens or plants. It is such a dissapointment that I haven't bothered to go back to this show for the past 7 yrs.

You would think that they would learn or at least take a survey to see what people are interested in seeing. It's very obvious that the Home & Garden Show's home office doesn't really care! Everyone that I know says the exact same thing........"seen it once, no need to go back"....they are trying to sell home improvements, probably more $$$ in that!

Nice plants!

Shriley the MD show had a nice horticultural hall this year, complete with lots of vendors selling lots of plants. I worked it for the AZ Patch...

didn't control my self quite as well as CC especially since Asiatica was there ;)

The thing that ticked my husband off is that they charged us 8 bucks each to get in there so they can try to sell us stuff?

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

I think ours was like $10 but I don't know if it included all 3 buildings, home, craft and horticulture. It was free for me since I was working for a vendor :)

Eventhough the plant exhibits are very nice and some vendors have plants to sell, (the landscapers had lovely exhibits only), I still felt that the home improvements section had more vendors trying to sell their merchandise. Most of the vendors try to get you to fill out cards with your information, so that they could contact people and follow-up after the show.

Jody, I bet your show was a good one then if they had lots of plants. The one in Knoxville was mostly home improvement stuff, not hardly any plants. Haven't been to one here in TX yet.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

There is a great one here also. But it is expensive once you pay admission and for parking!

Yes it was a great show this year. This was the first year that they had the hort. hall set up with vendors to specifically sell plants. There were some great plants too! I came home with some new ee's, arisaema's, carnivorous plants, a new bonsai pot and several other plants, LOL.

I got to meet and talk with Barry Yinger, as well as lots of other wonderful poeple.

The second weekend the hort. hall was filled with all Orchid vendors.

Shirely I have to be honest, I never made it to the craft or home buildings. I was just having too much fun in the horticultural hall. I don't usually go to the MD h&g show but probably will be in the future if they continue with the vendors in the hort. hall.

Same experience here. The Home & Garden show was in the Superdome, and we had to pay to get in and pay to park. And it was just home improvement stuff mostly, people trying to sell their doors, windows, siding. etc. Hardly any garden stuff at all. I won't make that mistake again, can't believe I pay to have people try to sell me stuff.
