daffodil question

I have daffodils up about 3 inches now. I want to know it I can just run the spade down through the center and separate them now? I want to share with a friend of mine who just moved to a new house in November and currently has no flowers.
I would appreciate your knowledge.

I'd lift a whole clump rather than risk cutting the bulbs up, you'll have to dig a few inches away from the clump and quite deep to avoid harming the roots, then you can take what you want out and replace the rest. this is best done in the autumn but you can do it now with care.
