any Louisiana brug lovers?????

Central, AR(Zone 7b)

I was told back last year that brugs grow "wild" in LA, well my father is a brug fanatic and I would love to take a "short" vacation and take my parents to see them if this is true. I know I have the tendency to be gullable but I do hope they weren't "pulling" my leg. If this is true could someone suggest where I would need to go to see them and when would be the best time of the year? Sorry if this is stupid, Tracy

P.S. This my Father of which I am very proud and as you can tell he is very PROUD of his first brugs.... (just the beginning of a SEVERE addiction HA/HA

Great picture!!!
I would love to see someplace they grow wild!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a great idea!! I bet they would love such a trip. I have never heard that they grow wild there but I wouldn't know for sure.

You Dad sure looks pleased! Great shot.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Tracy, you dad is doing a great job with his brugs. I've not heard about brugs growing wild anyplace in the states, but it would be nice to see that. I know some places in Calif. there are brug trees that are many years old. If you meant Louisianna, I'm not sure about that at all.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I have lived in Louisiana almost all of my life and don't know anyplace that they grow wild here.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Maybe they meant datura. Datura could certainly grow wild and get out of control.

Central, AR(Zone 7b)

to all----yes my father is very proud of his brugs he ordered three from a mail order company last year and I do believe those three ate better---- (fertilizer) better than he did!!!!! hahaha. I would love to get him some variety- because he has just a light yellow and a white. He is on here as "wolflover". I thought the person may have been pulling my leg. Does anyone have any ideas/festivals on garden related things to do in Louisiana? We are both gardening addicts---(he got it from me!!!!! hahaha yea right!) But at the moment brugs are his everything. I will have lots of plants I can trade if anyone has some cuttings or rooted ones to trade.----Other than a light yellow or white.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Tracy, I won't have anything until fall now, but would be happy to send him some then. You can order brugs from Kartuz and Logee's if you are in a rush.

Tracy:

Great picture of Dad! I have some tip cuttings of Frosty Pink that I just started last night. If they do as well as the ones I started on 3/1 (it was an experiment, and I didn't do enough LOL! I will have some I can send you. I have no idea how well they would transport though. Maybe someone here can shed some insight. Plus it would probably be easier on them to ship directly to him.... Anyone have any ideas on this?

Here are the ones that I have going. The others will be about this size. Pretty small. He may want something bigger.

Brugie--- I am in no hurry! What is the lowest temps they can take if you mulch them? I would like to plant them in the garden and try some stem cuttings from them in the fall. Tracy

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've heard of some surviving well in zone 8. Versicolors probably would not survive those temps. How cold do you get and does your ground freeze? I sure would hold some cuttings in the house when you try leaving them outside in the garden, so you will be sure to have one of each kind for the next year.

I also remember someone saying recently that the ones in the ground took longer to bloom. Thought I should come back and put that in here. Not having been able to try this myself, I'm only repeating what I heard.

Tracy, what part of Louisiana are you planning to visit? I live in South Louisiana and grow and sell brugs here in Mandeville.

Central, AR(Zone 7b)

Brugie---- I understand them not making our winters because it isn't uncommon for us to drop down to the 20's. I was just wondering on if a frost would hurt them if we just set them outside now. They are needing some sun.

Mary--- neither of us have ever been in your state so we would like to plan it around gardening stuff. How far is Mandeville???? We are about 2 and a half hours north of the state line.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Tracy, if your nights are 45 degrees, you can put them out. If you see it is going to get cold, I'd bring them under cover again. It shouldn't be long before it will be safe for you to put them out. Just make sure that you harden them off. Don't put them in direct sun right away.

Central, AR(Zone 7b)

Brugie---- thanks so much for all of your advice!!!! I really appreciate it.

Kaufman---- I would just love to trade for a couple if they root as plan. My dad will be tickled! just let me know when you are ready.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Hallo Tracy, welcome in in our group! This is a very nice picture of your Dad and his plants. Do you also have Brugs?

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Tracy: I'll let you know, and I want nothing in return. You were overly, overly generous with the seeds you gave me a few months ago. I'll be happy to oblige. Now if someone will let me know how established they must be to ship???

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Mandeville is just outside of New Orleans, about a 5 hour drive from Shreveport. Which part of Arkansas are you in? Where would you be coming into Louisiana?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

As small as they are Gretchen, I wouldn't mail them until well rooted and then you can wrap the roots in wet paper towels, then a plastic bag or foil, whatever works for you and roll them in newspaper and into the Priority box. Then you are off to the PO to give them their share. $$$$ LOL!! Oh yes, I do try to wrap each small cutting individually.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thanks Shirley! Maybe another month then, If they don't cook in the GH between now and then. I was just checking our long term forecast, and as of today, there is no prediction of a freeze between now and April 2nd. Wish I knew for sure...I'll just bring those into the house after I plant everything else. Thank you so much!!!

Central, AR(Zone 7b)

Monika---- I have a couple of brugs that I started from him. I really like them but I am addicted to daylillies at this time. (May change tommorrow!)
Mary we are north of Pine Bluff then thru McGeehee---I have always wanted to see New Orleans--- I hope to go last of April or first part of May. So if you have any recommendations I would more than happy to listen.
Gretchen--- Now that is toooooo nice! I was so glad to be able to share my seeds with you- hope you enjoy them! Tracy

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

What do you want recommendations for? Gardens to see? There is Hodge's Gardens in Florien, Louisiana, but the azaleas will be finished blooming, at least I think they will, but it is still nice.

There is the Longue Vue house and Gardens in New Orleans, and the New Orleans Botanical Garden.

The American Rose Society Rose Center is in Shreveport.

Jungle Gardens at Avery Island.

Just a few I can think of off the top of my head.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Tracy - I am enjoying them! I have so many of yours already up and ready to transplant into the ground. Can't wait to see my/your Texas Red Star Hibiscus, and the Hollyhocks, and the Queen Anne's Lace, etc...in bloom! As soon as these are ready I'll package them like Brugie suggested and let you know when they're headed your way. As long as you haven't moved, I still have your address. I would say it will be at least a month, and who knows how many will make it, but here's what I have for you: Frosty, Isabella, Pink Floyd, Milk & Honey and Variegata. The Variegata has a white bloom, but the foliage is interesting. He might like it. Anyway, say a little prayer that they make it. If not, I'll send you some cuttings in the Fall. But I'll keep you informed along the way :)

Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

brugs dont exactly grow wild here
but there sure are a lot of people who grow them
they're pretty hardy here, from what i can tell

:)

Central, AR(Zone 7b)

Gretchen------girl I love you! Should your texas star not make it let me know because I just found some in my garden that reseeded. Your gardens are bound to be beautifulllllll!!!!

Miss Kitty--- what part of LA are you in--- I would love to see them?

Olathe, KS(Zone 6a)

GROWING WILD!?!
Sounds like heaven to me.

Murchison, TX(Zone 8b)

I live in North east texas. And Brugs will winter here. As my mom has 2 that she put in the ground with old tires around them, and she just mulches in the winter. They are slower to bloom but they do well.
