...how Mother Nature came up with such beauty.

Pretty paws. I especially like the yellow one. Do you have yours in the ground?

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow those are beautiful!

All the Kangaroo Paws are in ground and didn't even blink during our winter storms. They've been blooming since around the end of January and look better and better in this heat spell. They ask for nothing and keep on blooming.

I have never heard of these beauties. What is the botanical name?

Northern California, CA

They are Anigozanthos http://plantsdatabase.com/b/Haemodoraceae/Anigozanthos/

Really sturdy self - reliant plants that just keep on being pretty.

Happenstance, do you know if it would come back from roots in zone 8. We get down in 20's occasionally.

Morning -

Don't know......we rarely get frost and they are somewhat frost sensitive, but foliage can be cut back for new growth in the spring. Mine are in the ground, but they can be grown in pots.

I have read that water should be withheld after bloom, but these get regular irrigation from March-October and it rains here from Oct-March. I do know they can be grown in pots, but I like the wild look they get in a garden setting.

Here's a link with probably more information than you ever wanted to know about these great plants:

Barb, they had some Orange and Pink ones at the Lowe's here in Covington, I picked up 3 pink ones. The girl at the checkout said the vendor told her they would live in our area, but I have my doubts. Seems like it would be too wet here for them, since they are native to Australia, I believe.

Mary that is what I thought after reading more about them. Our winters are sooooooooooo wet.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Depending on where you are in the country, the winters in Australia are very wet. Monsoon season so to speak. Just not freezing cold.

Morning All -

We have wet winters here (average rainfall is about 30 inches from October - April/May with no rain to speak of in the Summer months) with our low temp of around 40F. They seem to love the winter rains, are evergreen and begin blooming after New Year's.

I've found that some of the miniature (mainly the red) varieties don't seem to be as hardy here in 9b.......but it could have been the pocket gophers too as they were very active in the area where the smaller ones were planted.
